Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Founding of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly (May 10, 1995 - May 10, 2025):

Over the past 30 years, the Association and its cadres and members of the elderly in Hanoi have always enthusiastically competed in patriotism, upholding the spirit of "Old age - Bright example", making practical contributions to the development of the capital, contributing to the community, and deserving to be a "tall tree with great shade" for children and grandchildren to learn from and follow.

Inheriting tradition

Elderly people in Ba Dinh district participate in general cleaning of the neighborhood every Saturday morning.

The Vietnam Association of the Elderly was formerly the Association of Elderly People for National Salvation. Throughout the glorious history of the nation, the Vietnamese elderly have played an important role, being the driving force for the development of society. Inheriting the Association of Elderly People for National Salvation, on May 10, 1995, the Vietnam Association of the Elderly was established, becoming a historical milestone in the process of building and developing the Association. Over the past 30 years, with 6 congress terms, the Association of the Elderly at all levels has gradually developed, always playing the core role in caring for and promoting the role of the elderly, along with the whole country on the path of building and defending the Fatherland.

Along with the general development of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, the Hanoi Association of the Elderly is assessed by the Central Association as one of the localities that has been proactive, creative, and active in building the Association organization and effectively implementing patriotic emulation movements.

Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Nguyen The Toan said that the city currently has more than 1.1 million elderly people. The Hanoi Elderly Association has attracted more than 1 million members, operating in 13,681 association groups, 4,898 branches, 526 grassroots associations, 30 district, county and town Elderly Associations. Over 30 years of construction and development, the cadres and members of the capital's elderly association have always been united, made efforts and been creative in carrying out the tasks assigned by the Central Government and the city.

Promoting the role of the elderly, over the years, the City Elderly Association has actively promoted emulation movements, taking care of building an increasingly strong Association. Associations at all levels have also promoted the emulation movement "Old age - Bright example", actively participated in gratitude movements and cared for the elderly in the area. Every year, more than 100,000 elderly people are congratulated and celebrated their longevity, with a total amount of more than 100 billion VND; thousands of elderly people in difficult circumstances are visited and given gifts, with a total value of nearly 80 billion VND/year; coordinated to organize health check-ups, consultations, and provide free medicine for nearly 500,000 elderly people, helping the elderly detect diseases early, receive timely treatment, and feel more secure in their daily lives. In addition, the whole city has established 516 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs; 5,602 cultural, artistic, physical education and sports clubs with more than 197,000 members...

With determination and constant efforts, in 2020, the cadres and members of the elderly in the capital were honored to receive the Third Class Labor Medal from the Party and State; for 3 consecutive years (2022, 2023 and 2024), the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly awarded the Emulation Flag to the excellent unit leading the Emulation Cluster...

Old age sets a good example

Outstanding among the emulation movements of the elderly is the movement "Old age - Bright example". The movement mobilizes the potential and intelligence of a large number of elderly people.

One of the typical examples of the movement is Mr. Nguyen Minh Trung, Chairman of the Elderly Association of Doi Can Ward (Ba Dinh District). Mr. Nguyen Minh Trung shared: “As Chairman of the Association, I have participated in contributing and mobilizing people to contribute resources and support the Association's activities. Every year, the "Fund for caring for and promoting the role of the elderly" is raised from 80 million VND or more. In addition, the Association also actively helps and encourages single elderly people and those in difficult circumstances to live happily, healthily and usefully. Thanks to that, the Elderly Association of the ward has mobilized 160 members/year to join the Association, bringing the rate of elderly people participating in the Association to 92.5%".

Setting a shining example of economic development, Mr. Le Van Nga, a member of the Elderly Association of Tu Lap Commune (Me Linh District) has boldly converted the crop structure from rice to lily cultivation with a total area of 13 hectares. Mr. Nga said: “Every year, the total income of the family is 5.2 billion VND, creating jobs for 15-20 local workers with a salary of 6-10 million VND/person/month. In addition, my family also guides, helps, transfers techniques, provides materials, seedlings, planting techniques and accepts product consumption for a number of households in the village. The families are all developing very well.”

It can be affirmed that through the emulation movement "Old age - Bright example", the elderly in Hanoi have made important contributions to the development of the city in all aspects. Every year, the grassroots Elderly Association and its branches and groups achieve 16-20% of "Old age - Bright example"; members achieve 13-15% of "Old age - Bright example".

“In the coming time, the City Elderly Association at all levels will promote and improve the quality of the emulation movement “Old age - Bright example”; continue to closely coordinate with departments, branches, organizations, and advise Party committees and authorities at all levels to promote the care of the physical and mental health of the elderly, especially focusing on supporting the elderly in difficult circumstances, the elderly living alone, and the disabled. The City Elderly Association also clearly identifies its core role in gathering and promoting the wisdom, experience, and prestige of the elderly, creating motivation for the emulation movement “Old age - Bright example” so that the elderly can continue to contribute,” Mr. Nguyen The Toan emphasized.
