Shining revolutionary spirit

The fire of the Cay Coc struggle was ignited by the incident when the reactionary Kuomintang twice unjustly arrested comrade Nguyen Thong - a resistance cadre against the French in Tien Tho, and detained and interrogated him at the house of Ngo Ngoc Huong.

During the first arrest on September 27, 1954, under pressure from the people's fierce fighting spirit, Battalion 601 of the French Union Army stationed at Cay Coc market (Tien Tho) had to intervene, forcing the Kuomintang to release the person.

The climax was when comrade Nguyen Thong was arrested for the second time on the night of September 28, 1954, the wave of indignation of the people spread, gathered around Ngo Ngoc Huong's house to demand his release. Although the Nationalist Party apologized, the people pressed forward, demanding that he sign a commitment.

Tien Phuoc district officials tried their best to persuade the masses to disperse to avoid losses, but in the end they still could not stop the seething fighting spirit among the people.

And thousands of people from Tien Phong, Tien My, Tien Ky, Tien Tho, and Tien Lap communes flocked to Cay Coc market, joining people from Que Son, Thang Binh, Tam Ky districts and Quang Ngai province to trade in Tien Phuoc, fighting for people's rights and democracy.

Cornered, the Kuomintang called for help everywhere. Under the direction of the French commander stationed in Da Nang , Battalion 601 stationed in Cay Coc opened fire to suppress, killing and injuring more than 330 people.

The bloodshed did not stop the hatred for the enemy; groups of people continued to charge forward, grabbing guns to fight back. Knowing that they had seriously violated the Geneva Agreement, the enemy wanted to rob the bodies to cover up their crimes, but our people were determined to protect the number of casualties as evidence to denounce them.

Based on people

In any historical period, from the Cay Coc struggle in 1954 to the period of building and developing the homeland today, the people of Tien Tho are always ready to join in, unanimously responding to the Party's policies and the State's policies.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ty - Secretary of the Tien Tho Commune Party Committee said that when the locality launched the movement to donate land to build roads, people enthusiastically participated in contributing money, working days, donating land, voluntarily dismantling fences, architectural objects, etc. The most recent is the "people's power" road leading to village 2, more than 2km long, which was just completed and concreted this September.

As one of the households in village 2 that donated the most land, Mr. Nguyen Chi Linh expressed his excitement at contributing to the local development.

Mr. Linh shared: “I don’t remember how much land I donated to build this road. I only know that the road cuts through rice fields, with a total output of 700 kg of rice before, now after donating it, I can only produce 100 kg. Income has decreased, but in return, it sets an example for the villagers to donate land to build the road. Every day, there is no longer the scene of “dusty sun, muddy rain”, people can travel smoothly, that is good enough.”

With the consensus of the people, Tien Tho has asphalted and concreted more than 12km of rural roads; more than 13km of village and inter-village roads have been concreted. In addition, villagers also participate in lighting up the country roads, planting flowers and ornamental plants, and organizing weekly environmental cleaning, ensuring the roads are "green - clean - beautiful - safe".

“Promoting revolutionary traditions, generations of Tien Tho people have responded, actively participated, and contributed to the movements of the whole people uniting to build a cultural life, protect national security, and build new rural areas...

Thanks to that, the movements have become practical and effective in each residential area, contributing to promoting socio -economic development and ensuring national security and defense. This is the premise for Tien Tho to truly make a breakthrough and develop comprehensively in the coming time" - Mr. Nguyen Van Ty said.

On June 19, 2009, the historical site of the Cay Coc struggle was ranked at the provincial level by the People's Committee of Quang Nam province.
On January 29, 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 424 to rank the Cay Coc historical site as a national monument.

To promote the value of the relic in educating patriotic traditions, on March 3, 2021, the Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 565 approving the investment project to build the Cay Coc Struggle Memorial Site, with a total investment of 30 billion VND. In May 2023, the Tien Phuoc District People's Committee held the inauguration ceremony of phase 1 of the project (the investment capital for this phase is more than 14.7 billion VND).
