Vietnam has brilliantly demonstrated the spirit, mettle and diplomatic identity of Vietnam in the Ho Chi Minh era, strongly affirming the message of a Vietnam that loves peace, respects justice and reason; has the indomitable will to protect independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity; and is ready to cooperate in friendship with all countries and peoples in the world.
Vietnam has been a great source of inspiration and encouragement for the national liberation movement across five continents, for independence, freedom, peace, democracy, progress and social justice; opening the way for the collapse of old colonialism around the world.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, in the context of a complex and volatile world with many opportunities and multi-dimensional challenges like today, the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement is an opportunity to review the heroic history of the nation; to be excited and proud of previous generations; to further deepen the stature and significance of this particularly important victory. In order to strongly arouse patriotism, national pride and aspirations, and efforts to rise up; to continue to deeply grasp and flexibly and creatively apply the ideology, style and art of diplomacy in the unique and distinctive Ho Chi Minh era, imbued with the identity of the "Vietnamese bamboo tree" with a firm root, a strong trunk and flexible branches, to maintain peace and stability, creating a favorable environment for the country to develop rapidly and sustainably, standing shoulder to shoulder with the world powers as beloved Uncle Ho always wished.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son speaks at the Ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized that, along with the Dien Bien Phu victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world", the signing of the Geneva Agreement successfully ended our people's resistance war against French colonialism, opening up a new strategic situation for the Vietnamese revolution: building socialism in the North, while simultaneously carrying out the national liberation revolution in the South to fully realize the goal of peace, national independence, national unification, and the whole country building socialism.
The victory of the Geneva Agreement had epochal significance, because it was not only a victory for the Vietnamese people and the three Indochinese countries, but also a common victory for oppressed peoples. This Agreement, together with the Dien Bien Phu victory, strongly encouraged colonial peoples and peace-loving peoples in the world to firmly believe in righteousness, morality and justice, and to rise up to fight and overthrow colonialism worldwide.
Vietnam's victory at the Geneva Conference stemmed from the correct revolutionary line and the wise leadership and direction of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh; from the burning desire for peace, heroic patriotism, and the intelligence and mettle of the Vietnamese people. The Geneva Agreement is the crystallization of the arduous struggle and great sacrifices of our army and people.
Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son emphasized that, along with the 1946 Preliminary Agreement and the 1973 Paris Agreement, the 1954 Geneva Agreement was a milestone in the history of Vietnam's revolutionary diplomacy, bearing the imprint of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, style and diplomatic art. The process of negotiating, signing and implementing the Geneva Agreement is a handbook containing many profound lessons demonstrating the unique identity of the Vietnamese school of foreign affairs and diplomacy, which has been inherited, creatively applied and developed in the negotiation, signing and implementation of the 1973 Paris Agreement later as well as in building, developing the country and defending the Fatherland today.
Speaking at the ceremony, Cambodian Ambassador to Vietnam Chea Kimtha affirmed that the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement is an event of great historical significance to recall the resistance period and the steadfast and heroic examples of the heroes of the Vietnamese liberation army who fought to regain independence from the colonial regime.
Lao Ambassador to Vietnam Khamphao Ernthavanh stated that the lessons of struggle at the Geneva Conference and the experiences in the Dien Bien Phu campaign have become a strong torch leading the revolution, military and political struggles in the struggle to completely liberate the three Indochinese countries. 70 years have passed, but the Geneva Agreement still holds its value in the cause of protecting peace, building and developing the three countries today.
