On the morning of July 11, Gia Dinh People's Hospital (HCMC) announced that the success of these two kidney transplants was the result of the steely spirit, high responsibility and solid skills of the team of doctors and nurses in the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
The miracles have come
During the evaluation, preparation and surgery, the medical team also received important professional advice from Associate Professor, Dr. Thai Minh Sam and Dr. Hoang Khac Chuan, in charge of the Department of Urology, Cho Ray Hospital.
Previously, on June 29, Ms. NVBT unfortunately had a serious motorbike accident and was determined to be brain dead after 3 consultations. Thanks to the humane decision of Ms. T.'s family, the precious donated organs have contributed to saving the lives of many people.
Ms. T's heart was successfully transplanted to a patient at Hue Central Hospital and 2 kidneys were used to transplant to Mr. D.CP and Ms. NTHL at Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
The first person to receive a kidney transplant from Ms. T. was Mr. D.CP. He used to work as a salesman, but since he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, Mr. P. was fired by the company because he could not guarantee the time required for dialysis 3 times a week.
Mr. P's mother takes him to the hospital three times a week for dialysis, hoping for a miracle to happen to her son.
When he learned that he had received a kidney transplant, Mr. P. could not believe it was true. He shared that after a long time of living in despair and hopelessness, he could now breathe a sigh of relief and think about the future.
The second person to receive a kidney from Ms. T. is Ms. NTHL. Ms. L. is currently a single mother of a 7-year-old boy and the breadwinner in a family with a 67-year-old mother.
Discovering that she had kidney disease, her husband left Ms. L. 4 years ago when their son was only 2 years old. Ms. L. worked as a pharmaceutical representative, raised her child, and took care of her elderly mother.
Despite having to undergo dialysis three times a week, she still tries to go to work to cover all living expenses. There are days when she has to rush back to work right after finishing her dialysis session and then rush to prepare dinner and her children's homework. Her situation is so difficult that she doesn't dare to hope for a miracle to happen to her.
One afternoon after work, when she received a call from Gia Dinh People's Hospital informing her that a suitable kidney was available, she was speechless and could not believe it. She hurriedly completed the procedures that night and the next morning, she received a kidney transplant.
When she woke up, she burst into tears knowing that she had been given another chance to live. She expressed her deep gratitude to the donor and her family because from now on she can live a healthy life, continue working to raise her children and take care of her elderly mother.
Gratitude to those who gave the priceless gift
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, said: "After more than 10 days of surgery, both Mr. D.CP and Ms. NTHL have recovered very well, overcoming the high-risk period after the transplant. Mr. D.CP and Ms. NTHL will be discharged in the next few days and will continue to be monitored regularly at the kidney transplant clinic."
Dr. Mai Phan Tuong Anh, deputy director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, affirmed that the success of the two kidney transplants is also an important milestone in the field of organ transplants at the hospital, aiming to perform liver transplants in the near future.
Gia Dinh People's Hospital respectfully expresses gratitude for the noble gesture of the organ donor's family, who gave the priceless gift of life.
From that humane heart, the hospital will continue to make constant efforts in the journey of saving people, improving professional quality and expanding life opportunities for patients who are waiting every day for a miracle called organ donation.
Kidney transplantation provides the best quality of life for people with end-stage renal disease.
Kidney transplantation is a kidney replacement therapy that provides the best quality of life for people with end-stage renal disease. Not all patients have relatives who can donate a kidney for transplantation. Organ donation from brain-dead patients is an opportunity for life to be revived.
However, due to our country's customs, to this day the source of donated organs is still mainly from living donors such as parents, siblings, relatives, spouses... The source of donated organs from brain-dead people is very limited.
In the first 6 months of the year, Gia Dinh People's Hospital performed 4 kidney transplants from brain-dead donors.
