History and heritage in the classroom.
The Management Board of the B1 Hong Phuoc Base Relic Site and teachers from Nguyen Trai High School recently collaborated to lead a lesson attended by nearly 900 students from grades 11 and 12. Going beyond the scope of an extracurricular activity, the event was a meticulously planned, formal lesson organized at the beginning of the school year.
Right on the historic site of the city, the students were divided into small groups, taking turns performing tasks. One group directly surveyed the secret tunnel system; another studied artifacts in the exhibition hall; and another documented the contributions of the people of Hong Phuoc and collected materials about historical figures.
Nguyen Van Truong Thanh (a student in class 12/5) shared that when he and his classmates were introduced to B1 Hong Phuoc as an important transit station for major battles, they only had a basic understanding and didn't fully appreciate it. But when they visited the base, saw the artifacts, and heard stories about the silent sacrifices of the people in sheltering revolutionary cadres and carrying out revolutionary activities, they all felt admiration and gratitude.
“Before we left, we were advised to research relevant materials and background knowledge about the destination. When we arrived and saw and experienced it firsthand, everyone was moved. It was a history lesson, but it was no longer dry and boring; it touched our emotions,” Thanh shared.
Recently, students throughout the school were surprised and delighted to immerse themselves in the traditional art of Tuong ( Vietnamese classical opera) performed by actors from the Da Nang Traditional Arts Theatre. The event helped them better understand the history, artistic characteristics, and cultural value of Tuong – a unique traditional theatrical art form of Quang Nam province. Seeing Tuong actors in person, and seeing the costumes and masks, many students confidently volunteered to demonstrate the movements on stage alongside the actors.
According to Ms. Duong Nguyen My Hanh, Deputy Head of the Literature and Music Department and Head of the Local Education group for 12th grade, the activity helps students appreciate the subtle beauty in the acting, music , and costumes of traditional Vietnamese opera. Through this, it fosters national pride, an awareness of preserving and promoting traditional cultural heritage, and develops skills in observation, appreciation, and expressing personal feelings after the experience.
Enriching local culture and history.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Phuoc, Principal of Nguyen Trai High School, the school always updates and adapts the content of the 2018 General Education Program to suit local realities.
Starting in the second semester, students from all grades will continue to participate in themed activities focusing on Literature, Art, and Artists of Quang Nam Province. These are not isolated or spontaneous activities, but rather part of the structured curriculum of the Local Education subject.
“The school develops its curriculum with the belief that only when students are immersed in a cultural and historical environment will their love for their homeland and sense of civic responsibility truly be ignited naturally and emotionally. With the positive effects observed so far, the school will continue to explore many new topics, as the merged city has many historical sites and distinctive cultural heritage,” Mr. Phuoc stated.
Mr. Pham Dinh Kha, Head of the Secondary Education - Student Affairs Department of the City Department of Education and Training, said that local education is a mandatory and indispensable part of the 2018 General Education Program. Schools will proactively develop programs that suit the economic, cultural, historical, infrastructure, and human conditions of their localities. Activities like those of Nguyen Trai High School are very effective and are encouraged by the education sector to be replicated.
