On the afternoon of April 23, Saigon Giai Phong newspaper launched a data journalism project called Ho Chi Minh City 50 years: Proud imprints through the pages of Saigon Giai Phong newspaper , in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, national reunification and the 50th anniversary of the first issue of Saigon Giai Phong (May 5, 1975 - May 5, 2025).

Quarterly data warehouse

This project systematizes information from the first publications of Saigon Giai Phong newspaper (May 5, 1975), depicting the proud marks of Ho Chi Minh City in the reconstruction, construction and development over the past 50 years with a dynamic, innovative, creative and pioneering spirit.

According to the organizers, the data journalism project helps readers clearly visualize the excitement of the people in the first days of liberation; the difficulties, challenges and great efforts of the Saigon - Gia Dinh City Military Management Committee in maintaining security and order, reviving new life in a chaotic post-war urban area.

This data project also helps readers review the developments and milestones of the 11 Ho Chi Minh City Party Congresses; the decisions, drastic activities, and key projects that changed the face of the city.

Digitized data is presented visually, information is diverse in form, from Longform, Infographic to video... helping readers easily experience.

The project was launched on Saigon Giai Phong Online newspaper on April 23. Saigon Giai Phong newspaper will continue to exploit the newspaper's valuable 50-year data warehouse to bring readers information on all aspects of the innovation and development journey of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general.

Provide diverse and convenient information

At the launch, Mr. Nguyen Khac Van - Deputy Editor-in-Chief in charge of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper - said: " Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper has an extremely valuable treasure, which is the content of about 17,000 issues of Saigon Giai Phong Newspaper published over the past 50 years.

This is our first data journalism project to exploit this treasure trove, serving readers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day.

We have been digitizing all the paper issues of Saigon Giai Phong newspaper, to create multimedia data journalism products to serve the public, or to serve the search, lookup, and research of organizations and individuals in need."

"We strongly use AI tools, with integrated AI assistant groups including: integrated text-to-speech applications; recovering lost or damaged files or pages; automatically extracting image features (face recognition, general scene features, people features, vehicle features, etc.); extremely fast search according to requested content" - Mr. Nguyen Khac Van emphasized.

Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Manh Cuong assessed this as a meaningful work, gathering many valuable documents accumulated and stored by Saigon Giai Phong newspaper from the first issues until now, creating a publication that not only serves readers, but is also a valuable source of documents and data, effectively serving research and synthesis work.

The work that Saigon Giai Phong newspaper has carried out has distilled, analyzed and evaluated in a vivid and practical way, contributing to enriching the content of the comments, assessments and conclusions of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

The sources of documents from this project meet very well the requirements of summarizing and drawing theoretical conclusions to serve the common political tasks of the city.
