Chance encounter with "Prison Diary"

Sharing his fate of being attached to Vietnam for nearly 5 decades, Professor Ahn Kyong Hwan said that since he was a high school student, he always wanted to work for a construction company after graduating from university, participating in construction projects to contribute to Vietnam's economic development.

While working in Ho Chi Minh City, he accidentally saw the work "Prison Diary" at a bookstore and from there became interested in Vietnamese literature, and began to research President Ho Chi Minh. "What impressed me with this work was President Ho Chi Minh's spirit of patriotism, love for the people, and love for the nation. He is truly a great man respected by people around the world," Professor Ahn Kyong Hwan expressed.

Before translating the work Prison Diary, he visited Uncle Ho's hometown, went alone to Kim Lien, Sen village and visited the birthplace and maternal home of the great President Ho Chi Minh... After returning from that visit, he started translating the work "Prison Diary" into Korean.

After a year of hard work, he finished translating the work and printed 1,000 copies to give to friends and university libraries. “I hope that through Koreans learning about President Ho Chi Minh, they will understand why Vietnamese people love President Ho Chi Minh and understand more about Vietnamese culture and people. Since then, I don’t remember how many times the work “Prison Diary” translated into Korean has been reprinted,” said Professor Ahn Kyong Hwan.

This translated collection of poems was presented to the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hanoi and was honored to be displayed on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of his birth.
