After checking the entire forest area in the Song Sat Lake basin, the authorities discovered more than 200 trees that had been drilled and injected with poison. Of these, nearly 10 trees were dead, some were partially dead. Some trees had 2 to 3 holes drilled, about 10cm deep. At the scene, the authorities discovered the shells of 2 bottles of herbicide. Realizing that this was a case of forest destruction by poison, the Management Board of the River Sat - Song Trau Inter-lake Watershed Protection Forest mobilized forces to pump water into the drilled holes to wash away the poison and save the trees.
Comrade Le Huyen, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, inspected the destruction of forest trees with poison in Bac Ai district.
Speaking at the field inspection, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee acknowledged that the incident had been detected by the Department of Agriculture and local authorities and timely measures had been taken, which was to determine the scope of early detection and measures to rescue the damaged trees. He requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, relevant authorities and Bac Ai district to continue implementing solutions to rescue the damaged trees to ensure the highest number of living trees; to delimit and re-determine all scenes to collect pesticide samples for investigation and trial according to the provisions of law. The Provincial People's Committee will assign the police force to coordinate with the Department of Agriculture and relevant authorities of Bac Ai to inform and investigate to take timely measures to prevent similar situations from happening in other forest areas.
Currently, the area where the forest trees were found to have been drilled and injected with toxic chemicals has been cordoned off by the forest owner and rangers, warning signs have been put up, tents and camps have been set up, and forces have been sent on duty 24/7 to investigate and determine the cause.
