Quang Nam Provincial Journalists Association - the hometown of patriot Huynh Thuc Khang, organized a visit to the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School Relic. |
On April 4, 1949, on the banks of the Cong River, in the middle of the mountains and forests of Tan Thai Commune (Dai Tu), an important event took place: the opening ceremony of the first class of the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School. The school was founded, named and directed by President Ho Chi Minh to be organized and implemented by the Viet Minh General Department.
The School Board of Directors was appointed to consist of 5 people, Mr. Do Duc Duc, Deputy Secretary of the Viet Minh General Department, as Director; Mr. Xuan Thuy as Deputy Director.
Due to the war situation, Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School only organized one short-term course. The students consisted of 42 people, who were political , military, and press cadres sent from all over the country. The 29 lecturers participating in the course were all rich in political and practical experience, cultural and artistic activists such as: Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Quoc Viet, Le Quang Dao, To Huu, Nguyen Thanh Le, Quang Dam, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Nguyen Huy Tuong, Xuan Dieu, Nam Cao, The Lu, Nguyen Tuan...
Although the training course only lasted for 3 months, for Vietnamese revolutionary journalism, Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School has forever gone down in history as a strong mark. Many of the students of the School that year have had their entire careers dedicated to revolutionary journalism.

At a rare age (95 years old), when returning to Dai Tu, memories of the Huynh Thuc Khang journalism class in Bo Ra more than 7 decades ago flooded the mind of journalist Ly Thi Trung, former Editor-in-Chief of the Capital Women's Newspaper. She slowly read to us the poem "Returning to the Old Place" she composed.
"Bo Ra, oh Bo Ra
Map no longer has a name
But in the heart intact
Memories of Bo Ra
Oh, Bo Ra, Bo Ra.
The opportunity to attend the first journalism class in the history of the country for Ms. Ly Thi Trung was when she joined other women to give speeches, propagandize people to support the resistance war, the army, help evacuated families, teach culture... she also wrote prose, poetry, and news to publish in newspapers.
The short story "The Little Monk" written by her was published in the newspaper and was praised by comrade Hoang Ngan, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union for National Salvation.
In 1949, the Viet Minh Headquarters opened a journalism class. Comrade Hoang Ngan, although he had never met her, remembered that in the Propaganda Group there was a woman who wrote for the press, and also wrote a very good short story, "The Little Mermaid", so he assigned her to attend the class.
Mrs. Ly Thi Trung recalled: Although the Huynh Thuc Khang journalism class only lasted for 3 months (from April to July 1949), we learned all the subjects from commentary, editorial, interview, investigation... 42 students came from Central newspapers, Army, sectors, inter-regional organizations with different levels of education, some had primary school degrees, some had high school degrees, most had high school degrees; they were very young, from 19 to 24, 25.
In the class there were 3 women: Ms. Mai Cuong (worked for Lao Dong Newspaper, later Deputy Minister of Finance), Ms. Phuong Lam (later died from enemy bombs in Tuyen Quang) and Ly Thi Trung.
Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School has contributed to creating famous names such as: Director Bang Chau, Tran Vu; writers and poets: Huu Mai, Tu Bich Hoang, Hai Nhu; journalists: Thep Moi, Tran Kien, Mai Thanh Hai, Ly Thi Trung, Mai Cuong, Pham Viet Thieu...

They have made great contributions to the glorious history of the country's press. From this milestone, the whole country now has more than 10 journalism training institutions at university and post-graduate levels, and by the end of 2024, there will be 884 press agencies.
On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its founding (April 4, 1949 - April 4, 2019), Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School was recognized as a national monument. Speaking at the ceremony, Journalist Thuan Huu, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper at that time, emphasized: Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School is a typical example of serious teaching and learning, even in extremely difficult resistance war circumstances. 42 students and 29 lecturers are truly the core of revolutionary journalism...
The Vietnam Press Museum has worked hard to collect documents and preserve and promote the value of this red address. On January 18, 2024, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, the Vietnam Journalists Association coordinated with the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province and relevant agencies to start the restoration and embellishment of the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School Relic.
The invested construction has added a meaningful destination to the map of contemporary Vietnamese journalism, meeting the expectations of generations of journalists across the country, and actively contributing to the work of propaganda and historical education.
