Installing traffic cones to reduce conflicts on Mai Dich steel overpass

Báo Giao thôngBáo Giao thông25/05/2024

After more than half a month of opening two steel overpasses for vehicles traveling in the inner city, the traffic situation at Mai Dich intersection has improved mainly on the roads under the overpass. The Xuan Thuy - Ho Tung Mau direction has reduced congestion due to the opening of new lanes under the bridge.

However, there is still a conflict between traffic from the overpass going down to the lower Ring Road 3 and vehicles from the lower road wanting to merge into the elevated lane.

To completely prevent traffic chaos, reduce conflicts and risks of accidents, the construction and management unit of the bridge has installed additional rows of marker posts.

Faced with the above situation, and to reduce conflicts and the risk of accidents, the construction and management unit, and the bridge maintenance unit, installed additional rows of steel markers on both sides of the overpass extending to the elevated slope of Ring Road 3, about 100m long.

Reporters' records show that the row of traffic cones preventing cars and motorbikes from encroaching on lanes has helped the elevated Ring Road 3 expressway and the newly put into use steel overpass operate as designed.

Urban traffic (Pham Hung - Pham Van Dong Street) and the elevated road of Ring Road 3 are clearly separated.

"With the installation of this row of traffic cones, traffic on the elevated ramp of Ring Road 3 when going down to Mai Dich intersection is organized in the direction that cars are allowed to turn right, with cars and motorbikes traveling on the road below being prohibited from going up the concrete overpass (Ring Road 3 elevated road). This has helped vehicles move more conveniently, reducing congestion much more than before," said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quan (Cau Giay, Hanoi ).

The commander of Traffic Police Team No. 6, Traffic Police Department, Hanoi City Police said: "Up to now, traffic through the overpass has been stable, not as problematic as the first days of operation. Only during rush hour is the traffic density higher but there is no congestion."

Traffic Police Team No. 6 maintains a checkpoint from morning to 10pm every day to regulate traffic flow and be ready to respond when congestion occurs.

In addition, Traffic Police Team No. 6 also assigned a patrol team on the route to handle violations, order and traffic safety.

The project to build a steel overpass at Mai Dich intersection started in early 2023 with a total investment of about 340 billion VND. After about a year of construction, in the early morning of May 6, this project was officially opened to traffic.

Each side of the steel bridge is 7.7m wide, with a 3.5m wide motor vehicle lane and a 2.75m wide motorbike lane.

After opening to traffic, the old Mai Dich bridge will be separated into an expressway axis, connecting to the elevated Ring Road 3. The new steel bridge on both sides ensures mixed traffic of motorbikes and cars that do not need to go up to the elevated Ring Road 3.
