Establishing the first international trauma training center in Vietnam

VnExpressVnExpress15/04/2024

Ho Chi Minh City Military Hospital 175 launched the first International Trauma Training Center (ITLS) in Vietnam, no longer dependent on foreign experts.

On the afternoon of April 15, Major General, Dr. Tran Quoc Viet, Director of Military Hospital 175, said that the international standard center will help Vietnam be proactive in training and granting ITLS certificates according to the requirements of the United Nations for medical forces of our country and other countries when participating in peacekeeping activities. The center can also train and grant certificates to medical staff inside and outside the military.

This is the 125th center in the world , the 5th in Southeast Asia and the first facility under the military medical unit of the region. The center's 18 instructors have at least 5 years of experience in emergency resuscitation, have foreign language skills, many of whom have participated in United Nations field hospitals. They have undergone 15 months of training by foreign experts, of which 2 have been certified as instructors specializing in emergency trauma in high-risk environments.

Previously, officers and soldiers of Vietnam's level 2 field hospitals had to rely on the US to train them to get this certificate, and there was no initiative in training. "The establishment of the center is an urgent need," said Major General Viet.

Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said that the center not only helps improve Vietnam's capacity for self-training in military medicine, but also opens up training opportunities for forces from countries in the region to participate in UN peacekeeping operations in the future. Together with the Bien Hoa Airport Dioxin Remediation Project, this is a result of cooperation between Vietnam and the US, with humanitarian significance.

Military Hospital 175 is the southernmost general hospital of the army. This is the first hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to organize emergency helicopters. In the near future, this place is oriented to build a multi-purpose emergency center, including waterways, air routes and roads. In recent years, the hospital has participated in deploying level 2 field hospitals to participate in UN peacekeeping operations in Africa.

It is expected that Vietnam's second ITLS center will be located at Military Hospital 103 in Hanoi.
