On September 6th, information from Da Nang Family Hospital indicated that the team of doctors in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department had successfully performed a total hysterectomy to remove a 3 kg fibroid tumor, the size of a 5-month pregnancy, which was causing prolonged menstrual bleeding in a female patient.
Previously, Ms. NTM (53 years old, residing in Quang Ngai province) came for a gynecological examination at Da Nang Family Hospital and stated that she had discovered a fibroid tumor 7 years ago and had previously been treated with medication.
Recently, noticing that her menstrual cycle lasted more than 20 days per month, Mrs. M. was hospitalized for treatment.
The doctor examines Mrs. M. before she is discharged from the hospital.
The ultrasound results showed that Mrs. M.'s uterus had a large tumor, equivalent to a 5-month pregnancy, located within the uterine muscle layer. The tumor had a smooth surface and showed signs of invasion, partially compressing other organs in the abdominal cavity.
To completely remove the tumor, the doctors decided to perform a total hysterectomy and removal of both adnexa on Mrs. M. After more than an hour of surgery, the medical team successfully removed the uterus containing the 3 kg tumor, which had been "nesting" in Mrs. M's uterus for 7 years, from her body.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Da Nang Family Hospital, stated that due to the extremely large size of the fibroid tumor and the patient's advanced age with four children, the doctors decided to remove the entire uterus and both adnexa to treat the condition thoroughly. Four days after the surgery, Mrs. M.'s health has stabilized.
Dr. Thanh Loan further explained that uterine fibroids are benign tumors of smooth muscle origin in the uterus, occurring in about 70% of women over 45. Most fibroids are asymptomatic, but they can cause abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, and urinary or gastrointestinal symptoms.
Women with uterine fibroids should have a gynecological examination annually to monitor the condition of the fibroids, or a follow-up examination if symptoms begin to appear, such as dull lower abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, prolonged menstruation, spotting, or heavy bleeding.
Doctors also recommend that women of childbearing age undergo regular health checkups to detect gynecological fibroid tumors early... If this condition is detected early, doctors can perform laparoscopic surgery, preserving the uterus and avoiding major surgery with an open incision.
