Thanks to robots, doctors in Hanoi can operate on patients in Ho Chi Minh City.

With the technological conditions in Vietnam, in the future, patients in Ho Chi Minh City can still have surgery performed by doctors in Hanoi.

That is the assessment of Professor, Dr. Tran Binh Giang, President of the Vietnam Association of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery, at a specialized scientific conference held in Thai Nguyen on November 14-15.

According to Professor Giang, endoscopic surgery has been performed on all organs in the body: brain, joints, abdomen; cardiovascular, thoracic; applying single-port endoscopic surgery techniques, endoscopic through natural routes, effectively treating patients, recovering early, reducing hospital stay time. Vietnam is completely capable of performing remote endoscopic surgery under current technological conditions, with the level of surgeons.

With robotic endoscopic surgery and information technology applications, Vietnamese doctors will be able to perform remote surgery in the near future.

According to Professor Giang, to perform remote surgery, it is important to achieve fast transmission, because the robot's control unit and the control unit are connected by fiber optic cable. When the distance does not exceed the allowable delay, it is possible to perform remote endoscopic surgery.

"From now on, if a patient in Ho Chi Minh City wants a hospital in Hanoi to perform remote endoscopic surgery, it will be completely within reach and can be done," Professor Giang affirmed.

Promoting the application of robots in surgery and moving towards remote endoscopic surgery for emergency cases in remote, isolated, border and island areas will be a focus in the surgical field in Vietnam.

Professor Giang added that in 2003, the first remote endoscopic surgery was performed across the Atlantic, the patient being operated on was in the US.

More surgical robots

Leading experts in endoscopic surgery assess that information technology, as well as electrical engineering in medicine, especially in surgery, with many types of robots have been applied in Vietnam. Currently, the 5th generation robot allows for very high precision surgeries because the robot's joints have optimized features.

Smart robots in surgery have been deployed at K Hospital, National Children's Hospital, Binh Dan Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. Among them, some hospitals have performed thousands of surgeries. In the near future, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and National University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital will also use the latest generation of robots in surgery.

Professor Giang also shared that cutting-edge techniques have been rapidly developed in Vietnam's surgical sector. As for organ transplants, not only single kidney, liver, heart, cornea, limb, and pancreas transplants are performed, but also multiple organ transplants. In particular, heart, liver; heart, lung; liver, kidney transplants have been performed simultaneously at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

In the country, new techniques are also applied, such as endoscopic organ harvesting and multiple organ harvesting for transplant to patients. Vietnam has performed more than 1,000 organ transplants per year, the highest in Southeast Asia.

At the 2nd Congress of the Vietnam Association of Surgical and Endoscopic Surgery, held on the afternoon of November 14 in Thai Nguyen , Professor, Dr. Tran Binh Giang continued to be elected as President of the Association.

The Vietnam Association of Surgical and Endoscopic Surgeons promotes research and application of smart surgical solutions, robotic surgery, diagnostic imaging, artificial intelligence, 3D simulation... to improve treatment quality and reduce hospital stay for patients.

Organize basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery training courses; increase the number of surgical specialists to hospitals in mountainous and remote areas, bringing techniques to serve patients. With common diseases such as appendicitis, just over 1 day after laparoscopic surgery, patients can return to normal life.
