The resolution is expected to be voted on Wednesday by the 193 members of the UN General Assembly, as the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza approaches a year.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon urged member states to reject the resolution, calling it “an attempt to destroy Israel.” He stressed that instead of condemning Hamas’s violent actions on October 7 last year, the resolution would only serve to further destabilize the region.
Even if passed, the resolution would not have binding legal force, but the level of support would reflect the view of the international community. Unlike the Security Council, the General Assembly does not have a veto.
The resolution demands that Israel withdraw its troops and stop building new settlements, and compensate Palestinians for the damage caused by the occupation. It also calls on countries to impose sanctions related to acts of violence by Israeli settler groups.
Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said the Palestinians faced an “existential threat” and demanded an end to the Israeli occupation and the return of Palestinians to their land “in peace and security”. Ambassador Mansour also revealed that the draft initially called for Israel to withdraw within six months, but was extended to a year to address concerns from some countries.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas Greenfield said the resolution was flawed in many ways. She also said the resolution could complicate the situation and hinder progress toward a two-state solution.
