Foreign media quoted Mr. Dujarric as saying that reports of Israeli attacks on Aleppo and Damascus airports were extremely worrying, especially in light of warnings by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the scenario of increasing tensions between Israel and Palestine.
The spokesman quoted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as strongly condemning all acts of violence in Syria, calling on all parties to respect their obligations under international law, and reiterating that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under international humanitarian law.
“We are at a time of heightened tensions, where any miscalculation could lead to further violence in an already volatile region,” the UN Secretary-General’s spokesman said at a press briefing on October 12.
Mr. Dujarric stressed that the suspension of operations at the two airports in Syria will temporarily hinder the mission of the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service, which is maintaining operations at both airports to support humanitarian programs in the Middle Eastern country.
The statement was made by Mr. Dujarric in the context of Syria's state news agency SANA reporting on October 12 that Israeli missile attacks had caused international airports in Damascus and Aleppo to stop operating.
SANA quoted a Syrian military source as saying that “a barrage of missiles” from Israel hit two airports simultaneously, but caused no casualties. Meanwhile, local media channel Sham FM said Syria deployed air defense forces in response to the attack.
The development marked Israel's first attack on Syria since Hamas launched its largest attack on Israeli territory in decades on October 7. The attack came a day before Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian was set to visit Syria.
Over the years, Israel has carried out attacks on what it describes as Iranian-linked targets in Syria, including both the Damascus and Aleppo international airports. Most recently, in May 2023, Israel struck Aleppo airport, killing three people and shutting it down.
The Israeli military has not yet made any statement about the latest information just released by Syria./.
