Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long said that this trade promotion conference is important in reviewing and summarizing the situation and lessons learned from export activities in the first 6 months of 2024.
Reporting at the conference, Mr. Tran Thanh Hai - Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that import-export activities in the first 6 months of 2024 continued to record positive results. According to the estimated data of the inter-ministerial, the total import-export turnover of goods is estimated at 369.6 billion USD, up 16% over the same period last year, of which exports are estimated at 189.5 billion USD, up 14.2% over; imports are estimated at 180.2 billion USD, up 18.1%.
According to Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, a number of factors have been promoting the recovery of import and export activities such as: The results of the policy of international economic integration, diversification of Vietnam's export and import markets through negotiations and signing of new generation free trade agreements...
Along with that, the Government has strongly intervened with many comprehensive support solutions for the economy. As the leading agency in managing and operating import-export activities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has promptly identified difficulties and risks from export markets to advise and propose solutions to develop export markets.
In particular, Vietnam has also recently upgraded its relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States, promising sustainable development for trade relations between the two countries.
The problem of high inventories in markets is gradually being overcome, especially in key export markets that have faced difficulties in 2023 such as the EU and the United States. For the United States, recovering consumer indicators have become an important supporting factor for economic growth.
“The global economy in 2024 still faces many risks and is difficult to predict. The fight against inflation still has many uncertain factors, especially the monetary policies of major countries. The current problem of excess capacity in China will also increase competitive pressure in the market. When consumer demand declines, China's excess supply of cheap goods can be promoted for export to other countries, ” said Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, adding that , with favorable and difficult factors as well as positive growth results of import and export turnover in the first months of 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade assessed that 2024 will have more opportunities for Vietnam's goods export activities to recover.
Regarding export activities in the coming time, the leader of the Import-Export Department emphasized that the Ministry of Industry and Trade continues to innovate trade promotion activities, focusing on promoting at the highest level the digital transformation program in trade promotion activities and connecting Vietnamese enterprises and their products (especially agricultural and aquatic products) to the Vietnam Trade Office system in countries and territories, in order to introduce and promote products and seek opportunities to expand the market.
In addition, units of the Ministry of Industry and Trade need to review the key and focal products and markets that need to be prioritized for trade promotion in the short, medium and long term; at the same time, closely coordinate to jointly implement a series of specialized activities of many units within the framework of a trade promotion program, in order to improve efficiency and save resources in the context of limited state budget funding.
In addition, it is necessary to coordinate in guiding localities, industry associations, and enterprises to propose and develop plans to implement trade promotion activities to develop domestic markets and import and export, and digital transformation in trade promotion in accordance with the Strategies and projects approved by the Prime Minister.

Assessing the results of trade promotion activities in the first 6 months of the year, Mr. Vu Ba Phu, Director of the Trade Promotion Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) emphasized that under the attention and close direction of the Government leaders, trade promotion activities have brought many practical values to the business community nationwide. Trade promotion activities have contributed to connecting the consumption of enterprises' products with domestic and foreign markets, to effectively support enterprises in exploiting and searching for markets, strengthening production linkages, and promoting product consumption.
Specifically, trade promotion activities have focused on enhancing trade promotion by exploiting Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to diversify markets, supply chains and boost exports; Promoting trade and developing import and export of Economic Zones; Promoting investment to attract foreign investors in the processing and manufacturing sectors to improve the quality of domestically produced products, meeting world market standards; Coordinating with the Vietnamese Trade Office system abroad to advise and provide market information to localities and businesses.
Mr. Vu Ba Phu said that in the first 6 months of 2024, 06 trade promotion conferences with the Vietnamese Trade Office system abroad were held on a general or in-depth basis by market group and export industry group. Trade Offices, Trade Office branches, and Trade Promotion Offices in Vietnam provided detailed reports on nearly 180 local information updates, provided more than 25 discussion contents assessing advantages, opportunities, and comments on challenges and risks for import-export activities of Vietnamese enterprises, updated information on regulations, supply situation, market fluctuations, export orientation, and proposed many practical and useful measures to contribute to improving the efficiency of Vietnam's trade and export activities.
"Up to now, the proactive and active participation of localities, industry associations, and a large number of enterprises has helped the Conference become an effective bridge for information exchange, enhancing coordination between localities, industry associations representing the domestic business community with the Vietnamese Trade Office system abroad, promptly removing difficulties and obstacles in import-export activities to make the most of new opportunities from markets, promoting sustainable export development and effective import " - Mr. Vu Ba Phu commented.
In the context that many of Vietnam's export markets continue to increase new requirements for international trade, establish more dense market barriers, increase the trend of trade protection, green transformation, focus on health protection products, organic products, energy conversion factors, sustainable development... The change in the world and regional situation brings both advantages and opportunities, difficulties and challenges intertwined, posing many new requirements for trade promotion work, Mr. Vu Ba Phu said that trade promotion activities in the coming time will be flexible, innovate trade promotion work, combine traditional and modern trade promotion, associated with e-commerce, digital economy; strengthen communication, promotion, improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese branded products and goods; propagate and raise awareness in the business community about green transformation, sustainable production, in order to support businesses to improve their competitiveness, adapt to current market trends.
At the Conference, representatives of the Department of Industry and Trade of provinces and cities updated the export promotion situation in the first 6 months of 2024 and proposed tasks and solutions for trade promotion in the last 6 months of the year; At the same time, representatives of the Vietnam Trade Office in a number of key markets also exchanged and updated information on policies and recommendations for trade promotion activities in the last 6 months of 2024.
Concluding the conference, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long emphasized that Vietnam's import-export activities in the first 6 months of the year have improved, bringing positive signals. This result has a significant contribution from Vietnam's Trade Offices abroad and the initiative of relevant units under the Ministry.
According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long, through the meeting, it can be seen that localities have specific plans to support and accompany businesses in expanding their markets. Businesses are also proactive in trade issues, which is considered decisive, enhancing Vietnam's import and export activities. In the last 6 months of 2024, it is necessary to focus on new points to promote trade. In particular, it is necessary to disseminate information to businesses and localities on the most important contents of free trade agreements, especially for important markets. Trade promotion activities must have a focus, key points, and specific plans, promoting trade not only for foreign markets but also in coordination with localities, especially regional linkages, regional linkages and industry linkages to promote these activities. Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is also developing legal documents and policy mechanisms to support businesses and localities in international integration in general and trade promotion in particular.
