The principal's story about the most special relief in his 25-year teaching career
On the morning of November 22, sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter, Mr. Pham Van Tuong, Principal of Quy Nhon College of Technology, said that on the afternoon of November 18, after school, students returned to the dormitory to rest, that night the flood water rose very quickly. By the morning of November 19, the water surrounded the school campus, deeply flooded, some sections were more than 1.8 m high.
At the time the floodwaters surrounded the dormitory, there were more than 500 students in the dormitory, including 482 students from the school, 14 Lao students and 30 high school students in the national excellent student training team. These students have families in the flooded areas so they stayed in the dormitory to avoid the flood.
Mr. Pham Van Tuong, Principal of Quy Nhon College of Technology, recounted how he and 10 teachers in the school swam and provided food relief to students during the flood.
On the morning of November 19, Mr. Tuong arrived at school and witnessed the floodwaters surrounding the dormitory, with more than 500 students trapped inside, without food, many of whom called in panic. On the one hand, the teachers continuously reassured the students, while at the same time, he mobilized the teachers and the school's teaching staff, especially teachers who knew how to swim and were healthy, to find ways to supply and bring food to the students. The school's finance department was mobilized to prepare food. A teacher with a high-chassis car was mobilized to transport the goods. The female teachers stayed outside to hold the food bags. The healthy male teachers who knew how to swim, brought life jackets, swam in, and carried the food.
A total of 10 male teachers from the school carried bags containing 50 boxes of instant noodles, 400 loaves of bread, and many boxes of mineral water, swam into the school, followed ropes to reach 4 dormitories, and delivered food to the students.
"We, the teachers, thought about what we had to do to bring food to the children. The water was flowing very fast. Luckily, while we were on our way, we came across a convoy of army trucks that were providing relief and reinforcements to the people. The trucks carried us and the food right to the school gate," said Mr. Tuong.

Parachute cords and ropes were extended from the school staff on duty in the dormitory swimming out; from outside the school gate, teachers clung to the ropes, swam in from the school gate carrying food on their shoulders and connected, groups of teachers who helped students met at the lecture hall, spread out, and brought food to students in the dormitories. The water flowed very fast, the normal road from the school gate to the dormitory was only about 500 meters, but when the flood rose, many sections of water rose very high, teachers had to find a detour, moving so it also took more time.
The Principal of Quy Nhon College of Technology recounted the story and updated the situation as of the morning of November 22.
At around 1pm, the students were overjoyed to receive bread, instant noodles, and mineral water. They were both hungry and scared after a night and a morning surrounded by water. Now that they saw their teachers providing food aid and received words of encouragement and reassurance from their teachers, they felt reassured.
"We only think about how to ensure the safety of the students, the students must be safe," said Mr. Tuong about the motivation that urged the teachers to immerse themselves in cold water to rescue the students.
At the same time, the teacher said that this would be the most memorable memory in his 25 years of teaching. As someone who has witnessed many flood seasons and swam in floodwaters many times, this was the first time the teachers swam together and brought food to the students in floodwaters, right during the 20.11 season. This is also a beautiful memory of the teacher-student relationship and the spirit of solidarity that the teachers will remember forever.
"When we went to rescue the children, we left all our phones in the security room outside, only brought life jackets and raincoats, some people even took off their shirts to swim more easily, no one thought about filming or taking pictures. However, in the group, there was a teacher who had a bag to protect his phone underwater, he wore the phone around his neck and recorded the images that everyone saw," Mr. Tuong added.
"The safety of students is paramount"
This morning, November 22, teacher Pham Van Tuong said that the school has directed departments to handle hygiene and disease prevention so that students in the safe area can return to school on Monday (November 24).

On the afternoon of November 20, when the water had receded safely, many students were picked up by their parents. Currently, about 200 students remain in the dormitory. The school has moved the canteen to a higher place and turned on the backup generator to serve food to the students. At the same time, the shops and restaurants around the school have also resumed operations. On the morning of November 21, electricity was restored.
On the afternoon of November 22, the school also held an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors for departments to report on the impact of the flood, review preliminary damages, and prepare treatment plans for the coming time to ensure the teaching and learning process in the coming time.
"Currently, there is no specific report on the damage to the school's facilities after the flood, but the most fortunate thing is that people are safe. The safety of students is paramount. Preliminarily, with the naked eye, it can be observed that the Faculty of Automotive Technology with many machines and equipment, especially many new machines with an investment of tens of billions of dong, were heavily affected, severely damaged, and covered in mud," Mr. Tuong shared.
