On the afternoon of October 29, due to the Binh Dien Hydropower Plant continuing to discharge floodwaters, the water level on the Huong River rose rapidly. Binh Tri Thien Railway Joint Stock Company continued to dispatch two trains to load the two bridges.
Two trains carrying rocks weighing more than 1,100 tons are intended to increase the load and prevent the Bach Ho and Da Vien railway bridges from being washed away by rising floodwaters. After loading the bridges and braking the cars, the locomotives will be brought to Hue station.
Previously, on October 27, the water level of the Huong River continuously rose, threatening the safety of the Bach Ho railway bridge (Hue City). To protect the project, the railway industry urgently mobilized 19 stone-carrying wagons (nearly 700 tons) to block the bridge to increase the load, avoiding the risk of being swept away by the strong current.
Railway leaders said that sending trains to hold bridges is an emergency solution, often applied during heavy rains and floods, to help protect important works and ensure safety for the national railway.
On the evening of October 27, the Huong River flooded the bottom of the Da Vien railway bridge girder (the section connecting to Bach Ho bridge) by about 10 cm. Waves hit the bridge pillars hard, threatening the safety of the structure. Therefore, at about 8:30 p.m. the same day, the railway industry dispatched an additional cargo ship carrying 450 tons of rock to Da Vien bridge to increase the load.
