Flood on Thu Bon River in Da Nang exceeds historical peak in 1964

Early this morning, the water level of Thu Bon River ( Da Nang ) at Cau Lau station reached 5.62m, exceeding the historical peak of 5.48m recorded in 1964, while the flood on Huong River is gradually receding.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, at 2:00 a.m. on October 30, the water level on the Thu Bon River (Da Nang City) at Cau Lau station reached 5.62m, 1.62m higher than alert level 3 (BĐ3) and exceeding the historical flood level of 1964 (5.48m).

At the same time, the water level on the Huong River (Hue City) at Kim Long station was 4.56m (1.06m above BĐ3); the Vu Gia River at Ai Nghia station reached 10.22m (1.22m above BĐ3); and the Tra Khuc River ( Quang Ngai ) at Tra Khuc station was at 5.81m, 0.69m below BĐ3.

It is forecasted that in the next 6 hours, the flood on Thu Bon River at Cau Lau station will fluctuate at a high level and on BĐ3 from 1.6-1.7m, higher than the historical flood in 1964.

Many communes and wards in the downstream areas of Thu Bon and Vu Gia rivers were deeply flooded.

In the next 12 hours, flood on Thu Bon river at Cau Lau station will continue to fluctuate at a high level and 1.5m above BĐ3; flood on Huong river and Vu Gia river will continue to decrease and be 0.60-0.65m higher than BĐ3; flood on Bo river will continue to decrease and be 0.3m below BĐ3; flood on Tra Khuc river will continue to decrease and be 0.10m above BĐ2.

In the next 12-24 hours, flood on Thu Bon River at Cau Lau station will fluctuate at a high level and 1.1m above BĐ3; flood on Huong River will continue to decrease and be 0.1m above BĐ3; flood on Bo River and Vu Gia River will continue to decrease and be 0.3-0.7m below BĐ3; flood on Tra Khuc River will continue to decrease and be 0.5m below BĐ2.

Level Warning flood disaster risk is level 3. Deep, widespread flooding from Hue city to Quang Ngai province will continue for the next few days.

Not only being surrounded by floods, the Central region also suffered heavy rain. Accordingly, on the day and night of October 30, Hue City and Da Nang City had rain, moderate rain, locally heavy rain with rainfall of 20-40mm, locally over 70mm.

On the afternoon and night of October 30, the Central Highlands, the South and the eastern provinces from Quang Ngai to Lam Dong will have showers and thunderstorms with rainfall of 10-30mm, in some places heavy rain over 70mm.

From early morning of October 30 to night of October 31, Nghe An to Quang Tri will have moderate to heavy rain, with common rainfall of 100-200mm, and locally very heavy rain of over 350mm. There is a risk of heavy rain, with rainfall in 3 hours possibly exceeding 150mm.

During the day and night of November 1, from Nghe An to Quang Ngai, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain, and locally very heavy rain with rainfall from Nghe An to Northern Quang Tri 50-100mm, locally over 200mm; from Southern Quang Tri to Quang Ngai 40-70mm, in some places over 150mm.

Heavy rain in the Central region is likely to last until about November 4.

Heavy rain has been falling for many days, soil moisture models show that some areas in Quang Tri province, Hue city, Da Nang city, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai are nearly saturated (over 85%) or have reached saturation. In the next 6 hours, there is a risk of flash floods, landslides, and land subsidence on slopes and small streams in many communes/wards.
