Statistics released by the Japan National Tourism Organization on October 16 showed that the number of foreign visitors to Japan is increasing rapidly this year, with the number of visitors from January to September 2024 already surpassing the total for the whole of 2023.

Specifically, about 26.88 million foreign tourists visited Japan in the period from January to September 2024, an increase of 54.7% over the same period last year, higher than the figure of 25.07 million tourists for the whole year of 2023.

In September alone, the number of tourists is estimated to have increased by 31.5% over the same period last year, reaching a record 2.87 million.

This figure also increased by 26.4% compared to the same period in 2019 - the time before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.

The number of visitors from China doubled year-on-year to 652,300 in September 2024, thanks to increased flights and China's extended Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.

South Korea accounted for the largest number of visitors to Japan in September 2024, with 656,700, up 15.1% year-on-year. Visitors from Taiwan (China) increased 22.2% to 470,600 and the number of visitors from the United States increased 22.5% to 191,900 in September.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors from the Middle East also increased 14.8 percent last month to a record high of 14,200, thanks to an increase in the number of direct flights, including those connecting Istanbul and the Kansai region.

On the other hand, the number of Japanese tourists going abroad in September 2024 reached a total of 1.2 million people, up 20.7% over the same period last year but still down 30.8% compared to the level of September 2019./.
