Guinness World Records has removed the longest kiss category following safety concerns for participants and conflicts with updated policies.

The world record for the longest kiss belongs to Thai couple Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat. Their kiss lasted 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds, set at an event held in Pattaya in 2013.

There were nine couples participating in the event, one of whom was in her 70s. They kissed for 1 hour and 38 minutes and stopped because the husband could not stand any longer.

"Couples can't do anything but kiss each other. They have to kiss when drinking milk, eating bread, and even when going to the toilet. Contestants are hoping to break last year's record," said a representative of the organizing committee.

In the end, Ekkachai and Laksana won, taking home the grand prize of $3,300 and two diamond rings.

To be recognized by the Guinness World Records, the couple must kiss continuously, with their lips constantly touching. If their lips part, the couple will be immediately disqualified. They can drink through a straw but cannot leave each other's lips.

During the entire process of achieving the achievement, the couple must be alert, stand without any help from anyone, and cannot rest. They are also not allowed to wear adult diapers, use the toilet while kissing, and have the supervision of a referee, according to Timesnownews.

Safety concerns

The cancellation of the world record in this category is due to safety issues. When trying to set a record, couples have to kiss for a long time. Therefore, they face health risks such as lack of sleep, fasting, fainting...

In 1999, eventual winners Karmit Tzubera and Dror Orpaz were left barely conscious. The Israeli couple nearly fainted and were immediately hospitalized, after kissing for 30 hours and 45 minutes.

In 2004, Andrea Sarti from Italy needed emergency resuscitation after kissing his girlfriend for 31 hours and 18 minutes. His muscles cramped and he had to be massaged to relieve the pain. In 2011, a female participant even passed out after just 30 minutes of kissing.

What is the longest "kissing marathon"?

While the longest kiss category has been scrapped, Guinness World Records has launched a new challenge: The longest kiss marathon.

The main difference in this category is that participants are allowed to take breaks. After every hour of continuous kissing, participants are given a 5-minute break, which accumulates if not used.

Couples are allowed to temporarily part their lips to sleep and eat. This significantly reduces the risk of dangerous situations such as unconsciousness, mental confusion or the need for resuscitation.

Currently, there is no record holder for this category. The opportunity is open for anyone who aspires to claim the new title.
