Manchester City have won the Premier League for the third time in a row, thanks to Arsenal's 1-0 defeat in Nottingham. The result leaves the Gunners four points behind Manchester City, with just one game remaining. Manchester City are now officially champions with three games to spare, and will be crowned champions after their match against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, May 21. Chelsea may have to line up to welcome the new champions before that match.
This is Man City's fifth Premier League title in the last six seasons, and also the 12th title under coach Pep Guardiola. They will have a few weeks to prepare for the two remaining finals of the season, against Man Utd in the FA Cup on June 3 and Inter in the Champions League a week later. If Man City win these two matches, Guardiola will become the first coach in history to bring the "treble" to a European team twice. The Spaniard did it for the first time with Barca in the 2008-2009 season, also his first season in coaching.
In their last 35 games, Man City have won 27, scored 92 goals and collected 85 points. They were second in the table for most of the season, but a run of 11 consecutive wins saw them leapfrog Arsenal to the top of the table. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta's men gradually fell behind and eventually gave up.
The final turning point in the Man City race was the 4-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on April 26, denying their rivals the right to decide the title. Striker Erling Haaland scored once and assisted twice in that match. Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne scored twice and assisted once. Haaland leads the race for the Golden Boot with a record 36 goals, while De Bruyne is also the best passer with 16 assists.
Man City are the fifth team in the history of English football's top flight to win three consecutive titles, after Huddersfield (1924-1926), Arsenal (1933-1935), Liverpool (1982-1984) and Manchester United (1999-2001, 2007-2009). They will start the 2023-2024 season aiming to become the first team in history to win four consecutive English titles.
The number 3 has special significance for Man City this season, not just because they are crowned champions for the third time in a row or are aiming for a treble. Man City's Under-23 and Under-18 teams also won the English league at their respective levels this season. And this is also the third season in a row that Man City's first team, Under-23 and Under-18 teams have all won the domestic league.
