Being a locality blessed with favorable soil conditions, fresh climate, rich vegetation with many natural forests, Mu Cang Chai district has recently encouraged people to develop beekeeping for honey. The family of Mr. Giang A Trau - Nam Khat village, Nam Khat commune has been involved in beekeeping for more than 10 years.

Having gone through many difficulties, now Mr. Trau has accumulated a lot of experience, constantly learning, actively participating in technical training courses to improve his knowledge. Up to now, his family has over 70 honey bee colonies, each year harvesting from 1,000 to 1,200 liters of honey with a stable selling price of 180 - 200 thousand VND/liter. Mr. Trau's family's honey products are also recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards.

Like Giang A Trau's family, taking advantage of the land area and family garden, Giang A Phenh in Dao Xa village, Kim Noi commune is effectively maintaining a honey beekeeping model with 85 boxes. In a good year, the bee colony can collect 1,200 - 1,300 liters of honey. In addition to actively raising bees, Mr. Phenh also grows 200 orchids and over 100 seven-leafed orchids, bringing in a stable source of income.

Mr. Phenh shared: "I myself have visited and studied economic development models, especially honey beekeeping models. I see that beekeeping is not as hard as livestock farming but the economic benefits are higher. In the coming time, I hope that local authorities will have appropriate policies to create conditions for families to borrow capital, study, and apply techniques to ensure the quality and yield of honey."

Up to now, Mu Cang Chai district has 6,248 bee colonies, mainly concentrated in the communes of De Xu Phinh, Pung Luong, Nam Khat, La Pan Tan, Lao Chai, Nam Co, Cao Pha; the district has 1 cooperative and more than 20 beekeeping cooperative groups, with an average honey output of about 65 - 70 tons/year, revenue of over 10 billion VND per year. Most of Mu Cang Chai people have experience in traditional honey beekeeping with local bee breeds combined with the method of beekeeping in natural forests without using antibiotics... which has created a brand for Mu Cang Chai honey products.

Mr. Truong Dang Hung - Chairman of the District Farmers' Association said: "Implementing Action Program No. 10 of the Provincial People's Committee on implementing Resolution No. 20 of the Executive Committee of the Yen Bai Provincial Party Committee, term XIX, on developing the agricultural sector towards improving quality, efficiency, and added value associated with building sustainable new rural areas in Yen Bai province, period 2021 - 2025, the district has focused on developing in the direction of promoting the potential and advantages of the district; building medium and large-scale specialized commodity production areas linked to the value chain, improving product quality and production value. The honey beekeeping model along with economically effective agricultural models has contributed to changing the thinking and production methods of the people...".

It can be seen that after many years of support and investment from the State, people no longer expect or rely on the government, do not accept poverty but strive to rise up, learn to apply scientific and technical advances in cultivation and livestock development on the basis of exploiting the strengths of land and climate conditions.

Determining the right direction in economic construction and development, with the efforts of the Party committees, authorities and people in the fight against hunger and poverty, honey beekeeping models contribute to promoting the socio-economic development of Mu Cang Chai district.
