(QBĐT) - It was thought that the life of Ms. Pham Thi Hieu (born in 1986, Nghia Ninh commune, Dong Hoi city) would pass peacefully with three obedient and studious daughters. However, after that fateful day in 2019, an unexpected traffic accident caused her and her children to lose the solid support of their lives. After her husband passed away, raising three children alone, she never allowed herself to be weak or lose faith because now, her children only have their mother by their side to protect and give them hope. And the family fire continues to be lit amidst warmth and love...
In the small, simple house in Trung Nghia 2 village, Nghia Ninh commune, Ms. Hieu's day is busy with chickens and ducks - the livelihood of the four mother and children. She said that these days, autonomic nervous disorder and adrenal insufficiency have caused her to faint frequently, so she dare not go to work, she can only stay at home to treat the disease.
The joy of the mother and her children is that the eldest sister Nguyen Pham Quynh Nguyen (grade 12 student, Vo Nguyen Giap High School for the Gifted, won second prize in History at the national high school competition for excellent students in the 2023-2024 school year) is eagerly preparing to study at university in Hanoi . That is the first "sweet fruit" after many hardships and difficulties of the mother, although she knows that the road ahead is still full of difficulties, but as Ms. Hieu confided: "Just take bold steps, all difficulties will be left behind".
When her husband passed away in 2019, Ms. Hieu was devastated. Her three children were still young, her husband's family was in financial difficulty, and her mother had also died of cancer. After many sleepless nights, she finally decided to leave her husband's hometown in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh to return to her mother's house in Trung Nghia 2 village, Nghia Ninh commune. It was a difficult decision because she knew she could not take care of all three children by herself. Her grandparents wanted to help her raise a child, but she was determined: All three children would follow their mother because they had lost their father, and she could not let them endure the pain of separation.
The eldest sister, Quynh Nguyen, tearfully shared that back then, the three sisters' worry was that every time their mother came home and returned to Quang Binh , she would leave them alone at their paternal home, so every time they said goodbye, tears streamed down their faces. The youngest sister, Quynh Anh, recalled that the two older sisters cried the most because they were afraid that their mother would choose to stay with their paternal grandparents. After much determination, the four of them returned together to a house that was shabby but filled with love.

“Without the love, care, and active support of relatives, neighbors, the government, organizations, and philanthropists, the four of us would have had a hard time overcoming the difficulties…”, Ms. Hieu emotionally said. Previously, she worked at a restaurant in Dong Phu ward (Dong Hoi city). Although her salary was not much, the restaurant owner cared for her, shared her feelings, always gave her extra bonuses when she received her salary, then sent her fish, pieces of meat... and let her take food from the restaurant home. Thanks to that, the mother and her children had less worries, and their meals were less frugal.
At home, she raises pigs, chickens, ducks, etc. to increase her income and occasionally provide nutrition for her children after stressful exams. Organizations, especially the Women's Association of Trung Nghia 2 village and the Women's Union of Nghia Ninh commune, often come to encourage and support her. During the days she was treated in the hospital, the women came to encourage and instruct the children in their studies and help with gardening and animal husbandry. When philanthropists learned about the situation of the mother and her four children, they also joined hands to help. The family is a poor household in the commune, so she also shared more in life so that her children could concentrate on studying.
Her motivation is her children's diligence and good study. The family is poor, their father died early, their mother struggled to raise three children alone, so Quynh Nguyen, Quynh Chi, Quynh Anh, love their mother very much. Not only are they proactive in studying, but the three sisters also proactively divide up the housework. When their mother had to stay in the hospital, the sisters advised each other, both studying and taking care of the pigs and poultry so that their mother could rest assured during her long-term treatment. Quynh Nguyen cried when she remembered the anniversary of the Vietnam Women's Union's founding day (October 20) last year, Nguyen and her two younger siblings bought a small cake to visit and congratulate their mother in the hospital. It was not until after 10 p.m. that the three sisters returned home. That was a joyful and happy time that the whole family had not had for a long time.
“Have you ever loved something but didn’t dare to say it because you were afraid your mother wouldn’t have money to buy it?”, “Yes, many times! But I kept it to myself, just worried that if I told her, she would be sad...”, Quynh Nguyen shared. Ms. Hieu said that when Quynh Nguyen won the national prize and told her mother, she was both happy and sorry for her child: “My child is a good student but was born into such a difficult family, I wish he could be in a better-off family”. Quynh Nguyen hugged her mother and cried: “Mom, all I need is you to be by my side, no matter how hard it is, I can endure it...”.

Not only the eldest sister Quynh Nguyen, but also her younger siblings Quynh Chi and Quynh Anh have made great efforts in their studies. Last school year, the youngest sister Quynh Anh won the consolation prize in Biology in the city's 8th grade excellent student competition and is currently studying for the upcoming provincial competition. Each sister has her own dreams and is determined to study hard so that her mother's life in the future will be less difficult.
Ms. Hieu confided that Quynh Nguyen initially planned to study in Ho Chi Minh City, but then, seeing that her mother was sick, she decided to study in Hanoi so that she could be with her mother during her long-term treatment. The illness required Ms. Hieu to visit the doctor and take medicine regularly, her health declined, and recently, she has been staying at home, hanging around with the chickens and ducks. Every time she went to Hanoi for treatment, it was expensive, so when she could no longer bear it, she packed up and went to see a doctor.
What she wishes for now is to have good health to continue raising her children to be good people. She shared that she does not allow herself to rest for a single day, even when she is sick or ill. Although it is difficult, as long as she is healthy, she still tries, makes efforts, and does everything possible to not let her children leave their studies unfinished. She does not expect or rely on support or help, because she knows that there are still many lives that are more difficult and arduous than her family's. The small, simple house, although lacking the warmth of a husband and father, still has the love of a mother, the solidarity and efforts of her children, and the love and care of the villagers, the government, and local organizations.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Nga, President of the Women's Union of Nghia Ninh Commune, shared: “Ms. Pham Thi Hieu's family has always received attention and support from the authorities and organizations of the commune. Her two children have both participated in the "Godmother" program to ease the hardships on the way to school. The determination and spirit of striving to overcome difficulties of Ms. Hieu and her children have moved us and created all conditions to support the family. In addition to regularly encouraging and motivating, every time Ms. Hieu has to receive long-term treatment in the hospital, the women's union members come to help with housework, take care of pigs, chickens, ducks, and support the children's studies. We also hope that many businesses, units, and philanthropists will know about the family's situation and provide support so that the three children can complete their studies and have stable jobs." |
