Speaking at a press conference the same day, the head of the Mexican government emphasized that the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and in fact belongs to the people of Panama, after the US President-elect accused the Central American country of charging too high fees at the canal and threatened to demand the "return" of the project if it was not managed in an acceptable manner.
President Sheinbaum expressed support for the statement of his Panamanian counterpart José Raúl Mulino, who affirmed that every square meter of the Panama Canal and surrounding areas belongs to the Central American country and will continue to do so.
The Panama Canal was started by the French in 1880. After Paris abandoned it in 1893 due to difficulties, the US continued the project and completed it in 1914.
After a struggle for control of the canal since 1974, in September 1977, General Omar Torrijos and US President Jimmy Carter signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaty on the transfer of control of the canal in 1999 to Panama.
The Central American country has officially controlled the entire canal since 2000.
