Heavy rain in the North, flood warning on the Red River

On June 26, the North will have showers and thunderstorms, with localized heavy rain concentrated in Yen Bai , Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh...

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from the evening of June 26 to the morning of June 27, the provinces and cities of the North, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will continue to have showers and thunderstorms. Some places will have heavy to very heavy rain with the amount ranging from 15-30mm, some places over 60mm.

At the same time, the South Central, Central Highlands and South regions maintain thunderstorms with similar amounts to the above regions.

People should be on guard against thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. Localized heavy rains can cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas and urban areas.

The meteorological agency said that on the evening of June 26, the water level of Thao River and the lower reaches of the Red River rose rapidly but remained below the alarm level. Meanwhile, Tuyen Quang Hydropower Plant is operating two bottom spillway gates, and Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant is operating one bottom spillway gate.

The water level of the Thao River in Yen Bai is forecast to rise slowly and fluctuate at alert level 1 on the evening of June 26, then slowly decrease. The water level of the downstream Red River at the Hanoi hydrological station continues to rise and reach 5.3m, equivalent to below alert level 1 on the afternoon of June 27, then slowly decrease.

Experts warn of a high risk of flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous and midland provinces, especially the following provinces: Lai Chau, Son La, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, and Tuyen Quang.

Weather forecast for June 27 in regions across the country:

- Hanoi: At night and in the morning, showers with thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain. Lowest temperature 25-27 degrees Celsius, highest 31-33 degrees Celsius.

- Northwest: Showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain. Lowest temperature 23-26 degrees Celsius; highest 29-32 degrees Celsius.

- Northeast: At night and in the morning, showers with thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain. Lowest temperature 24-27 degrees Celsius; highest 30-33 degrees Celsius.

- From Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue: In the North, scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain. In the South, scattered thunderstorms, sunny days. Lowest temperature 24-27 degrees Celsius; highest 31-34 degrees Celsius.

- From Da Nang to Binh Thuan: Showers and thunderstorms in some places, scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening in the south, locally heavy rain. Sunny during the day. Lowest temperature 25-28 degrees Celsius; highest 31-34 degrees Celsius.

- Central Highlands: Showers and thunderstorms in some places, scattered thunderstorms in the evening, locally heavy rain. Lowest temperature 21-24 degrees Celsius; highest 29-32 degrees Celsius.

- Southern region: Showers and thunderstorms in some places, scattered thunderstorms in the evening, locally heavy rain. Lowest temperature 23-26 degrees Celsius; highest 31-34 degrees Celsius.
