Recently leaked photos of the prototype of the new generation Mitsubishi Pajero off-road SUV being tested in Europe have quickly attracted the attention of the off-road vehicle enthusiast community. Although Mitsubishi has not officially confirmed it, there is much evidence that the Japanese automaker is developing the next generation of Montero, with the new Mitsubishi Pajero 2026 expected to launch in late 2025.
The Montero was an icon of off-roading in the 1980s and 1990s. With a resounding success at the Dakar Rally, this SUV has built a lasting reputation for its powerful and durable performance on all terrains. However, since the early 2000s, the famous Montero off-road SUV model of the Japanese brand Mitsubishi has gradually been withdrawn from the US market, before being completely discontinued globally. Everything changed when in 2024, Mitsubishi quietly re-registered the copyright of the name "Montero" - a move seen as the opening step for the plan to revive this car line.
The prototype image reveals a modern, square and muscular design. Vertical LED headlights, a honeycomb grille and large skid plates give it a strong off-road feel. The car is tall and the body is muscular. Meanwhile, the rear end is inspired by the Nissan Patrol with horizontal taillights and vertical rear window. This design seems to be inspired by the DST and Destinator concepts that Mitsubishi introduced in 2024. Notably, the prototype has a rigid rear axle and six-bolt wheels – a sign that this is a body-on-frame SUV, suitable for harsh off-road terrain. In addition, if it is aimed at the European market, it is likely that the car will have a hybrid version.
The new engine block includes a traditional hybrid or a plug-in hybrid. The PHEV model can use a 2.4L gasoline engine combined with an electric motor for a capacity of about 302 horsepower - similar to the Outlander. Meanwhile, the 1.5L e-Power transmission (190 horsepower) of the Nissan Qashqai is also a viable option if you want to save money. With a proven tradition of off-road vehicles, experts believe that Mitsubishi's new SUV will almost certainly be equipped with a full-time 4-wheel drive system. Currently, Mitsubishi has not confirmed any information related to the name or official launch date.
