(CLO) Google has begun rolling out new AI features to Gemini Live, allowing the technology to "see" the screen or surroundings through the phone's camera and provide answers in real time.

Alex Joseph, a Google spokesperson, confirmed the news. These features come nearly a year after Google first introduced Project Astra, the AI technology platform behind Gemini Live.

A Reddit user reported that the new feature has appeared on his Xiaomi phone. In a video posted today, the user demonstrated Gemini's new screen-reading capabilities, one of two major features that Google announced it would roll out to Gemini Advanced subscribers in late March as part of its Google One AI Premium plan.

The other big feature is live video, which allows Gemini to analyze a stream of images from a phone’s camera and answer users’ questions in real time. In a demo video Google released earlier in March, a user tested the feature by asking Gemini for advice on the right paint color for their newly glazed ceramic product.

The launch of these AI features shows that Google is leading the race to develop intelligent virtual assistants.

Amazon is preparing to launch Alexa Plus, but it’s still in early beta. Apple has delayed its Siri upgrade, making it unable to compete with Gemini. Samsung is still keeping Bixby, but Gemini is now the default assistant on the latest Samsung phones.

At MWC 2025, Google committed to integrating Project Astra into Gemini Live and is currently rolling it out in stages. 9to5Google reports that it has spotted screen sharing and camera features starting to appear on a few individual Android devices.

Along with that, the ability to analyze live video is also expanded. Users can open the Gemini Live interface, start the live video stream, then tap the camera switch button in the right corner to allow Gemini to interact directly with the surrounding environment.

"Basically, this feature is helping Gemini 'see' the world in real time," said a technology expert.

While Google hasn’t released a specific list of supported devices, the company said in a statement in January that the Pixel line and the Galaxy S25 would be the first devices to receive Project Astra updates. However, there are currently no technical limitations that would limit Astra to specific devices.

Google may expand Gemini Live to iOS devices in the future, but for now, this feature remains exclusive to Android. Experts believe that Project Astra could completely change the way people interact with AI, ushering in a new era of more powerful real-time AI.
