Russian President Vladimir Putin said that in response to a request from his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko during a summit between the two leaders in the capital Minsk today, December 6.

The Russian leader stated that Moscow could deploy the new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic missile on the territory of its ally Belarus in the second half of next year. This timeline is "feasible" because by then, "the mass production of this system in Russia will increase and these missile systems will enter service in Russia's strategic forces."
Last month, Russia launched an Oreshnik missile at a Ukrainian city, in what Mr Putin described as the first test of the weapon in combat conditions.
The meeting between the two leaders, two close allies, was marked by the signing of a common security treaty. Mr. Putin's presence in Minsk coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Union State - a borderless alliance between the two former Soviet republics.
According to President Putin, the signed treaty "will help reliably protect the security of Russia and Belarus, thereby creating conditions for peaceful and sustainable development of the two countries."
Previously, according to the relevant document published on the official legal information portal on December 5, Mr. Putin approved the proposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on signing a security guarantee treaty with Belarus within the framework of the Union State.
Moscow and Minsk regularly hold joint military exercises, especially several since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, raising concerns that Minsk may be preparing for a more active role in Moscow's special military campaign.
