Officials of the Farmers' Association of Go Dau district and Thanh Duc commune visited Mr. Trong's ginseng growing model.
Mr. Nguyen Ton Trong (born in 1974), owner of the Bo Chinh ginseng garden, said that about 10 years ago, a physician in Hoa Thanh district (now Hoa Thanh town) gave him more than 10 seeds. This physician said: "This is a precious medicinal plant, try planting it, its flowers and tubers are very good", so he brought it home to try planting. At that time, Mr. Trong only knew that this was a type of ginseng, but did not know the specific name.
Later, a friend who also lived in Hoa Thanh brought seeds down to invite him to cooperate in planting. This friend said that they were Bo Chinh ginseng seeds. From then on, he signed a contract with a purchasing company. After several harvest seasons, Mr. Trong's family had a significant source of income.
Currently, Mr. Trong is growing 60 tall (6,000m2) of Bo Chinh ginseng, which is over 2 months old and is flowering. The flowers have 5 red and white petals, yellow pistils, and look quite beautiful. The ginseng is also starting to grow roots. Mr. Trong is harvesting the ginseng flowers.
Mr. Trong said that ginseng is easy to grow and has high profits compared to other crops. To grow ginseng, you must first prepare the soil thoroughly, then add manure and especially lime. Then make beds, each bed is 1.2m wide and about 3 inches high, then cover with soil and sow seeds.
Plants are spaced 3 inches apart, each bed is planted in 4 rows. Seeds are purchased from seed companies. Growing Panax not only harvests the tubers, but also the flowers. After about 2 months of planting, the ginseng blooms and can be harvested. Panax flowers are dried or sun-dried to make tea.
The tubers can be harvested after 6 to 9 months of planting, but if left longer, the tubers will be larger and of better quality. The tubers are sold to purchasing companies under contracts. According to Mr. Trong, growing Bo Chinh ginseng is highly profitable. With an average yield, he earns about 200 million VND/ha per crop (after deducting investment costs).
However, the investment capital for this crop is also quite high (about 100 million VND/ha). Therefore, it requires growers to have a lot of capital. It is worth noting that, to ensure product output, before planting ginseng, growers need to sign a contract with a purchasing company.
Mr. Truong Anh Dung - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Thanh Duc commune said that Mr. Trong's model of growing ginseng is more economically efficient than many other crops and can be replicated locally.
