However, some key export fruits are not in season, which will reduce supply, and it is estimated that exports in the last months of the year may decrease significantly, especially durian. It is forecasted that fruit and vegetable export turnover for the whole year of 2024 will increase by 25% compared to 2023, reaching more than 7 billion USD.
Supply-demand situation, price developments of fruits and vegetables:
In October 2024, the weather will be more favorable, and the supply of fruits and vegetables will be generally abundant. In the first 10 months of 2024, the output of most of the country's main fruits will increase compared to the same period in 2023 thanks to the increase in harvested area, of which: durian will increase by more than 20%, to more than 1.1 million tons; mango will reach 858 thousand tons, up 3.6%; oranges will increase by 2.3%, to 1.15 million tons; dragon fruit alone will decrease by 4.8%, to 841.7 thousand tons.
The supply of fruits and vegetables is more abundant, so the prices of many types of fruits and vegetables have decreased compared to the previous month. Specifically
+ Dragon fruit
In October 2024, the dragon fruit harvest output is estimated at 147.3 thousand tons; In the first 10 months of 2024, the output is estimated at 841.7 thousand tons, down 4.8% over the same period last year . Of which, Binh Thuan's dragon fruit output is estimated at 405 thousand tons; Tien Giang is estimated at 207 thousand tons, Long An is 142 thousand tons; Ba Ria - Vung Tau is estimated at 9.3 thousand tons; Tra Vinh is 12.5 thousand tons; Dong Nai is 15.1 thousand tons; Vinh Long is 4.4 thousand tons; Thanh Hoa is 4.2 thousand tons; Dak Lak is 5.8 thousand tons; Hai Duong is 4.3 thousand tons; the remaining provinces harvest about 32.1 thousand tons of dragon fruit.
In October 2024, dragon fruit prices generally fluctuated little compared to the previous month. In Tien Giang, the purchase price of red-fleshed dragon fruit type I ranged from 20,000 - 24,000 VND/kg; type 2 was priced at 16,000 - 18,000 VND/kg; type 3 was priced from 10,000 - 15,000 VND/kg. The purchase price of white-fleshed dragon fruit ranged from 12,000 VND/kg - 17,000 VND/kg, down 2,000 VND/kg compared to September 2024. Meanwhile, at markets in Hanoi, the retail price of red-fleshed dragon fruit type I ranged from 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg; white-fleshed dragon fruit ranged from 30,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, down 5,000 VND/kg compared to the previous month.
+ Thai Jackfruit
In October 2024, the weather was more favorable and supply increased, causing jackfruit prices to decrease significantly compared to the previous month. Specifically: in the provinces of the Mekong Delta, the purchase price of Kem Nhat jackfruit was from 29,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, down 10,000 VND/kg compared to September 2024; Kem Nhi jackfruit was from 20,000 VND/kg, down 5,000 VND/kg; Kem Ba jackfruit was from 7,000 VND/kg, down 8,000 VND/kg; market jackfruit was about 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg, down 2,000 VND/kg.
In the Eastern region, the price of Nhat jackfruit ranges from 17,000 VND/kg - 18,000 VND/kg, down 10,000 VND/kg; Nhi jackfruit ranges from 9,000 VND/kg, down 6,000 VND/kg compared to August 2024.
+ Mango
In October 2024, the prices of many types of mangoes in the Mekong Delta region decreased compared to the previous month. Specifically: the purchase price of green keo mango was 10,000 - 12,000 VND/kg, down 2,000 VND/kg; bag-fruit keo mango was 15,000 VND/kg, down 5,000 VND/kg; three-color mango was 15,000 VND/kg; Hoa Loc sand mango (3 fruits/kg) was priced from 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg, down 3,000 VND/kg; Chu sand mango type I was from 30,000 VND/kg, down 5,000 VND/kg compared to September 2024.
In the retail market, in Ho Chi Minh City, the retail price of Cat Chu mango ranges from 45,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, down 2,000 VND/kg compared to last month; Hoa Loc mango ranges from 50,000 - 60,000 VND/kg, down 5,000 VND/kg.
+ Durian
In October 2024, durian harvest output decreased significantly as durian in the Central Highlands entered the end of the favorable season, while durian in the Western and Southeastern provinces entered the off-season. The country's durian output is estimated at 154.2 thousand tons, down 15% compared to September 2024. In the first 10 months of 2024, the output is estimated at 1.139 million tons, up more than 20% over the same period in 2023. Of which: Tien Giang harvested 361 thousand tons, Dak Lak 259 thousand tons, Dong Nai 87.8 thousand tons, Lam Dong 115 thousand tons, Vinh Long 57 thousand tons, Can Tho 39 thousand tons, Binh Phuoc 39.5 thousand tons, Dak Nong 38 thousand tons, Tay Ninh 26 thousand tons, Gia Lai 26.8 thousand tons, the remaining provinces harvested about 90.8 thousand tons.
The narrowing durian supply has caused durian prices to increase sharply in October 2024. The purchase price of beautiful Ri6 durian is from 100,000 - 105,000 VND/kg, an increase of 40,000 VND/kg; Ri6 durian in buckets is from 85,000 - 90,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg. Beautiful Thai durian is priced from 130,000 - 135,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg; and Thai durian in buckets increased to 115,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, an increase of 45,000 VND/kg.
Vegetable and fruit import and export situation:
+ Export
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover in September 2024 reached 917.2 million USD, up 8.7% compared to August 2024 and 37.5% compared to September 2023; In the first 9 months of 2024, the turnover reached 5.6 billion USD, up 33.9% over the same period in 2023. Exports increased mainly due to increased exports to the leading market, China; in addition, exports to Thailand, the United States, and South Korea also increased quite strongly.

In September 2024, China was Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable consumption market with a turnover of 709.9 million USD, up 20.1% compared to August 2024 and up 44.5% compared to September 2023; The cumulative 9 months of 2024 reached 3.7 billion USD, up 37.8% over the same period last year, accounting for 67.2% of the total fruit and vegetable export turnover of the whole country. Next was exports to the Thai market reaching 38.8 million USD, down 5.3% compared to August 2024, but up 78.0% compared to September 2023; The cumulative 9 months of 2024 reached 202.3 million USD, up 87.2% over the same period in 2023, accounting for 3.6%. Exports to the United States ranked third with a turnover of 27.1 million USD, down 27.3% compared to August 2024, but up 29.1% compared to September 2023; The cumulative 9 months of 2024 reached 254.2 million USD, up 34.5% over the same period in 2023 and accounting for 4.5%. Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports to the EU in September 2024 reached 11.4 million USD, down 38.6% compared to August 2024 and down 43.1% compared to September 2023; The cumulative 9 months of 2024 reached 168.7 million USD, down 3.0% over the same period in 2023 and accounting for 3.0%.
In terms of types, durian continued to be the most exported fruit in September 2024 with a turnover of 673.8 million USD, an increase of 24.9% compared to August 2024; In the first 9 months of 2024, the turnover reached 2.82 billion USD, an increase of 63.3% over the same period last year, accounting for more than 50% of the total export turnover of fruits and vegetables. While the second largest export item, dragon fruit, is still in a downward trend, the turnover in September 2024 decreased by 4.4% compared to August 2024; in the first 9 months of 2024, it decreased by 19.8% compared to the same period in 2023, down to 391.6 million USD. Except for dragon fruit, other major exported fruits and vegetables such as longan, coconut, mango, and jackfruit all increased significantly compared to the same period in 2023.
In the final months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports continue to be supported by increased demand from world markets at the end of the year, especially China, plus the effects of trade agreements and protocols. However, at the end of the year, some key export fruits such as durian, mango, jackfruit, longan, etc. will enter the off-season, causing supply to narrow. It is forecasted that exports next month may decrease significantly, especially durian. In the whole year of 2024, export turnover is forecast to increase by 25% compared to 2023, to more than 7 billion USD.
+ Import
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable import turnover in September 2024 reached 211.9 million USD, down 3.8% compared to August 2024, but up 21.3% compared to September 2023; In the first 9 months of 2024, import turnover increased by 14% over the same period in 2023, to 1.6 billion USD.
Of which, China is the largest market supplying fruits and vegetables to Vietnam with a turnover of 102.5 million USD in September 2024, an increase of 2.3% compared to August 2024 and an increase of 17.8% compared to September 2023; In the first 9 months of 2024, the import turnover from China was 696.5 million USD, an increase of 24.2% over the same period last year, accounting for 43.5% of the total import turnover of fruits and vegetables. Next is the import from the US market with a turnover of 28.6 million USD, down 19.1% compared to August 2024, but up 55.1% compared to September 2023; In the first 9 months of 2024, it was 304.8 million USD, an increase of 27.6% over the same period last year, accounting for 18.4% of the total turnover.
Fruit and vegetable imports in the first 9 months of 2024 increased mainly from the Chinese, US and Myanmar markets and with major items such as tangerines, apples and coconuts.
