"In Kufa city in Najaf, a resident was attacked by a lion in his garden and died on the spot," Mufid Tahir, a spokesman for Najaf police, told local news site Rudaw.
According to local television reports, a neighbor of the victim witnessed the incident and shot the animal dead. Mr. al-Din was taken to Al-Sadr Hospital in Najaf for emergency treatment but died from his injuries.

The victim reportedly purchased the lion with the intention of keeping and taming it as a pet.
Authorities are investigating the incident. Iraq is still struggling with rampant illegal wildlife trafficking, a problem exacerbated by years of conflict.
Previously, in December 2024, a zookeeper was attacked by a lion after entering the lion's cage to "impress his girlfriend".
