This year, salt farmers sold salt at a high price, higher than previous years. During the traditional Tet holiday, salt grains cost 170,000 VND/bag (45kg), 60,000 VND/bag higher than last year. Currently, at the end of the season, salt prices are around 100,000 VND/bag. When the price of salt drops, salt farmers stock up until the middle of the rainy season when the price increases again to sell.
Salt making in Ben Tre province is favorable this year, salt farmers have a good income.
Every year, Ben Tre produces a salt crop with about 1,000 hectares, mainly in some localities such as Bao Thanh, Bao Thuan, An Thuy, Tan Thuy (Ba Tri district) and Thanh Phuoc, Thoi Thuan (Binh Dai district). The salt crop usually starts in October (lunar calendar) of the previous year to March (lunar calendar) of the following year.
This year, due to the hot weather and high salinity, salt production in Ben Tre province has been favorable, with salt productivity reaching 1,200 - 1,500 bushels/ha. Many salt farmers also combine aquaculture with salt production to earn hundreds of millions of VND/ha.
Mr. Le Van Tiep in Tan Lap hamlet, Thanh Phuoc commune, Binh Dai district has 8,000m2 of salt land combined with shrimp farming, shared that currently salt costs 100,000 VND/bag at an average level, before the price was 170,000 - 180,000 VND/bag, people only sell salt when the price increases.
“Compared to raising shrimp for salt production, it is more secure because when the shrimp crop is in season, the price is usually high, but when the price drops, the loss is huge. I harvest the shrimp and then make salt. When it rains, I usually stop farming in the third lunar month. I need to be flexible in choosing the time to raise shrimp and crabs, and when the season comes, I will make salt,” Mr. Tiep said./.
