At least three US soldiers were killed and more than 30 others injured, some seriously, after a US military base in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border was attacked by drones on January 28, US officials said.
This is the first time US soldiers have been killed in the region since the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza broke out last October. Previously, US bases in Syria and Iraq were also hit by fire.
The attack could be seen as another sign that the conflict in the Middle East is on the verge of escalating.
US President Joe Biden blamed Iran-backed extremist groups for the attack. "We will hold those responsible accountable and face the consequences in a manner of our choosing," the White House owner declared.
The international community, including Egypt and Israel, also condemned the attack, saying that this action threatens the security and stability of Jordan in particular and the entire region in general.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which is seen as the most significant escalation in tensions in the region since Hamas launched a raid on Israel on October 7, 2023.
There has been an increase in recent attacks between the US and its allies and Iran-backed militant groups in the Middle East.
Earlier this month, the US and UK carried out air strikes against Houthi and Hezbollah targets in Yemen and Iraq. Washington said the move was aimed at countering the threat posed by Iran-backed militias to shipping in the Red Sea.
