US-Italy send warships to the East Sea for joint exercises

Information from the US Navy's 7th Fleet was released on September 12. The exercise involved the US guided-missile destroyer USS Russell, the aircraft carrier ITS Cavour, the frigate ITS Alpino and the multipurpose warship ITS Raimondo Montecuccoli of the Italian Navy.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) , an Australian P-8A Poseidon aircraft also participated in the exercise.

During the exercise, ships and aircraft practiced anti-submarine warfare, joint tactics, surface warfare and command and control scenarios.

"Multilateral exercises are a concrete demonstration of the progress we are making with our allies and partners in the region," said Vice Admiral Fred Kacher, Commander of the 7th Fleet.

The exercise is an opportunity to “sharpen skills in one of the most complex maritime areas in the world ,” Kacher said.

7th Fleet spokesman Lieutenant Commander Jamie Moroney said this week's exercise aims to improve cooperation and readiness between the three countries, while "reassuring allies and partners in the region of the US's continued commitment to a free and open Indo- Pacific ."
