US: Hotel explosion in Texas, 21 people injured

An explosion at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, USA on January 8 (local time) injured 21 people. Witnesses said large pieces of the building were scattered on the street in the center of the area.

According to CNN, images recorded at the scene showed broken glass windows, collapsed walls and large piles of metal debris on the street where the 20-story hotel is located. Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Craig Trojacek said rescuers rescued some people trapped in the basement of the hotel. Of the 21 injured, one person is in critical condition, four people are seriously injured but the level of injury is not life-threatening.

According to Mr. Trojacek, at the time of the explosion, the Sandman Hotel had 26 rooms for rent. The hotel was undergoing renovations, but it is not yet possible to confirm that the construction activities caused the incident.

According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, the explosion may have been caused by gas. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the incident. There is currently no indication that the incident was criminal in nature. Fortunately, a restaurant was closed at the time of the explosion, otherwise the number of injuries would have been higher. Only three restaurant employees were among the injured.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported that a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred on the Indonesian island of Kepulauan Talaud on the morning of January 9. EMSC said the earthquake was at a depth of 91km. There was no information about damage yet. Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said that a magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurred early on the morning of January 9 in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Philippines. According to the US Tsunami Warning System, the earthquake did not lead to a tsunami warning and there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties. The epicenter of this earthquake was at a depth of 70km, about 100km from the southern tip of Mindanao Island. In December 2022, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred off the coast of Mindanao, leading to a brief tsunami warning. At least 3 people were killed in this incident.
