US-Philippines exercise to enhance joint combat capabilities in the East Sea

On June 5, the Philippine Armed Forces announced that the Philippine and US militaries conducted their 7th joint exercise in the East Sea to enhance the two sides' ability to coordinate operations.

According to Reuters news agency, the exercise took place on June 4 in waters off the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Zambales, far from disputed areas, including close-shore coordination activities as well as fire support.

In a statement, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said: "The Maritime Cooperation Activity (MCA) is a testament to the resolve of both countries to strengthen cooperation and enhance interoperability in accordance with international law."

The joint patrol also included the Philippine ship Miguel Malvar, a 118-meter guided-missile frigate that was commissioned last month.

This is one of two frigates built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries as part of the Philippines' military modernization program.

Military activities between the two treaty allies increased dramatically under Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
