According to Reuters on July 28, the Financial Times quoted a source saying that the US government has temporarily suspended measures to restrict technology exports to China to avoid disrupting trade negotiations with Beijing.
At the same time, support US President Donald Trump to promote a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this year.
Current and former officials say the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security — which oversees export controls — has been directed in recent months to avoid taking tougher action against China.
In addition, high-level economic negotiations between the two countries are expected to resume in Stockholm on July 28, aiming to resolve long-standing trade disputes between the world's two leading economies .
Notably, US technology group Nvidia announced this month that it would continue to sell H20 graphics processors to China, reversing an export ban imposed by the Trump administration in April to prevent China from accessing advanced AI chips on national security grounds.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the resumption of chip exports is part of the framework of negotiations related to rare earths and magnets between the two countries.
However, this move has met with opposition from security experts.
According to the Financial Times , 20 experts and former US officials - including Mr. Matt Pottinger, former deputy national security adviser - will send a letter to Mr. Lutnick to express concerns that loosening controls could weaken the US's economic and military advantage in the field of artificial intelligence.
The White House and the US Department of Commerce have yet to officially comment on the information. Reuters has also not been able to independently verify the content of the article.
