Ho Chi Minh City: A Technology teacher at Hong Bang Secondary School used an antenna (pointer) to hit an 8th grade male student, who later suffered a shoulder injury.

On the afternoon of December 9, Mr. Tran Van Luyen, Principal of Hong Bang Secondary School, District 5, confirmed that the incident took place on the afternoon of December 8, during a STEM class. The Technology teacher used an antenna to hit a student on the shoulder.

When he got home, the student felt pain and told his parents. His family took him to the hospital for a check-up. The X-ray results showed that he had a broken shoulder blade.

This morning, the school worked with the individuals and departments involved and decided to suspend the teacher from teaching in that class. Mr. Luyen said the teacher wrote a report, admitted his mistake and regretted his actions, but he refused to share the cause and developments of the incident.

That same evening, the principal informed that after verifying with the hospital, the X-ray results showed that the male student had a soft tissue injury in his shoulder, not a broken shoulder blade as the family initially reported.

The principal said he had discussed health care measures with the family and assigned teachers to help with homework while the student was on leave. The school offered to cover all medical expenses for the student.

"Regardless of the cause, the teacher's actions were completely wrong and the school will handle them seriously. As the head, I also take responsibility for letting this incident happen," said Mr. Luyen.

According to regulations, depending on the level, there are four forms of discipline for teachers if they are found to have violated the law, including reprimand, warning, dismissal or forced resignation.
