Trinh Quang Thach graduated from Hanoi National University of Education with a GPA of 3.98/4, the highest among students graduating early this year.
"Nearly four years ago, from the sunny and windy Central region, a student from Da Nang did not hesitate to accept challenges to move forward for noble things. That was choosing Hanoi Pedagogical University to nurture his dream of becoming a Geography teacher, despite hearing the question "Why did you choose to study pedagogy?" many times, the male student of the Geography department began his speech at the graduation ceremony on June 9.
Before that, Thach was both emotional and worried when he learned that he represented more than 1,300 graduating students this year to share at the closing ceremony.
Mr. Nguyen Quyet Chien, head of the Geography Department, Hanoi National University of Education, said that not only did Thach have the highest graduation grade point average (GPA) among more than 1,300 students this time, his score was also the highest in the history of the department.
For Thach, the results he achieved were a confirmation to his parents that studying in Hanoi was the right thing to do.

Quang Thach, 22 years old, is a former student of the social science class at Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Da Nang. Thanks to winning second prize in the national Geography exam, Thach was admitted directly to Hanoi Pedagogical University. However, at that time, Thach's mother reacted strongly when her son went to school far from home and chose to major in Pedagogy.
Having loved being a teacher since primary school and inspired by his Geography teachers in secondary school, Thach dreamed of becoming a Geography teacher. He repeatedly convinced his parents, sharing information about the program at Hanoi Pedagogical University and the success stories of his seniors. Finally, Thach received the nod from his family.
Not very sociable, in the first days in Hanoi, Thach was shy and did not dare to talk much with his friends. He also limited himself due to the prejudice that university teachers were not as close as in high school. After that, the openness of his friends and teachers at school made Thach comfortable, gradually becoming close and expanding many relationships. The male student's studies also went smoothly.
During the four years, in addition to studying at school, Thach spent a lot of time in the library doing research and homework, ensuring that he spent at least twice as much time studying as he did in class. Thach also often made his own outlines, created sets of questions for each subject, and answered them himself.
"There are many available outlines prepared by previous students and sold by photocopy shops. But when I looked at them, I found that some of the answers were incomplete. I was not comfortable with that, so I often made my own outlines to grasp the knowledge," Thach said.
The male student believes that this is also a way to help him get high scores because university lecturers do not grade according to the scale like high school but grade according to the students' understanding.

Studying Pedagogy, Thach's greatest joy is the internships. Thach was excited when in his final year he chose to intern at a private school in Hanoi. Practicing as a homeroom teacher, writing his own lesson plans, and teaching, Thach was able to hone his skills as a teacher and understand more about the private school environment.
On November 20 last year, Thach received congratulatory flowers from students for the first time. "I was very touched and surprised, I felt like a real teacher," Thach shared.
Thach said the biggest difficulty during his four years of university was overcoming the anxiety about choosing a major. Even after graduating, many people still asked him, "Why didn't you study Economics or another major with a better income?" or "Why didn't you choose Literature or Mathematics Pedagogy but chose Geography?"
The male student said that since registering for university, he knew that according to the new general education program (2018), middle school students study History - Geography interdisciplinary subjects, while in high school, Geography is an elective subject, but because he loves this subject, he did not change his direction.
"If we don't choose Pedagogy just because of prejudice, who will continue to develop our country's education?" Thach said, adding that even as a student, future teachers like me can contribute to educational innovation.
When I was doing my graduation thesis, I researched how teachers teach the new curriculum. While the curriculum requires teaching in the direction of developing students' abilities, in reality, many teachers have not changed for this goal. The research helped me find ways to teach in the right direction after graduation.

Teacher Nguyen Quyet Chien commented that there are few students who are as excellent in all aspects as Quang Thach. He was admitted to the Party in high school. In addition to studying, Thach is active in all school and class activities. The male student participates in scientific research and has won first prize at the school level and an encouragement prize at the ministry level with a topic in the field of sustainable development education.
"Thach also has many qualities. For example, he has good communication skills, which is very important to a teacher," said Mr. Chien.
Listening to Thach's first sharing at the graduation ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, Principal of Hanoi National University of Education, was very impressed. According to Mr. Minh, a teacher needs to have three elements: personality, expertise and motivation for the job. Only being good at expertise will make it difficult to become a teacher respected by everyone. Mr. Minh saw Thach's qualities and directly expressed his wish that Thach would pursue graduate studies at the school.
However, Thach had plans to study abroad. By enrolling in summer courses, Thach graduated three months early and returned to Da Nang to work as a Geography teacher at FPT Secondary School. With an IELTS 7.0 certificate, Thach taught and practiced English to achieve a higher level in order to apply for a government scholarship to study Educational Sciences abroad.
"I want to study abroad, then return to contribute to the development of education in Vietnam," Thach said.
