Depending on the age of the wild ducks, Mr. Vo Hoang Nha designs different cages and care methods.

Raising wild ducks - a new direction

With a fixed price of around 70,000 VND per duck, Mr. Vo Hoang Nha (residing in Gia Thanh hamlet, Tam Vu commune) expects to earn nearly 150 million VND from his flock of approximately 2,000 wild ducks. He shared that his flock consists of three different batches, each with about 1,000 ducks, depending on the initial number of ducklings supplied by the buyer. "Each batch takes about two months to raise before it's ready for sale, and then I start a new batch, raising them year-round, so the income is quite stable," Mr. Nha said.

After graduating from a veterinary college, Mr. Nha worked on chicken farms for a while. Later, having accumulated enough experience, he decided to become his own boss. "I had a large garden at home, plus 1 hectare of dragon fruit, so I decided to return to my hometown. Initially, I raised chickens and ducks. Later, when I saw someone looking for partners to raise wild ducks on the internet, I contacted them and started raising wild ducks. It's been 5-7 years now," Mr. Nha shared.

With his knowledge and experience in poultry farming, raising and caring for wild ducks was relatively easy for Mr. Nha. He invested in the coops, ponds, and care system with a focus on biosecurity. The coop floor was covered with coconut fiber and cleaned daily, ensuring environmental hygiene.

The duck pens all have automatic drinking and bathing water supply systems, and the ducks are fed entirely on feed, so he only spends about 2 hours a day caring for the flock. The rest of the time he takes care of his dragon fruit orchard, which is bearing fruit. In addition to the income from ducks, Mr. Nha also utilizes the duck manure, composting it to fertilize his dragon fruit trees and supplying it to some neighboring households, saving on fertilizer costs for his orchard.

According to the Tam Vu Commune Farmers' Association, Mr. Vo Hoang Nha's model is considered a suitable approach, contributing to diversifying livestock, increasing income for farmers in Tam Vu commune, and can be replicated in the future to promote rural economic development, meet market demands, and create sustainable livelihoods for the people.

Bonsai apricot blossom trees - elevating the value of apricot blossom trees.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Duoc is tending to a finished bonsai apricot tree. At this point, the value of the apricot tree has increased at least twofold compared to its original price.

Each locality has its own natural conditions and strengths, so the household economic development model is only truly effective when it suits the specific characteristics of that region. While Mr. Vo Hoang Nha in the dragon fruit capital has generated income from livestock farming combined with dragon fruit cultivation, Mr. Nguyen Tan Duoc (Mai Vang hamlet, Tan Tay commune) is a pioneer in enhancing the value of yellow apricot blossom trees through a bonsai cultivation model linked to e-commerce.

According to Anh Được, he started growing apricot blossom trees about 10 years ago and mainly sold them commercially to traders. Later, at the suggestion of a younger family member, he boldly experimented with selling apricot blossom trees on social media platforms through livestreaming. Apricot blossom trees of the right age and with beautiful shapes were brought to the live stream every evening and quickly attracted customer attention.

Mr. Được shared that he was one of the first households in Tân Tây apricot blossom village to start an online business. Thanks to the direct connection between growers and customers, intermediary costs were saved, resulting in higher profits for farmers. Seeing the effectiveness of selling apricot blossoms on e-commerce platforms, people in the village started learning from each other and venturing into online business. To date, the entire village has more than 20 online apricot blossom shops on social media platforms, opening up a new direction for local apricot blossom growers.

Not stopping there, driven by customer demand for fully shaped apricot blossom trees, Mr. Duoc continued to research and develop a bonsai apricot blossom cultivation model. According to him, to have a beautiful bonsai apricot blossom tree, in addition to choosing a healthy rootstock with a good shape, growers must also graft apricot blossom varieties with abundant flowers and many petals to create a tree with high aesthetic value that suits the tastes of enthusiasts.

With each grafted apricot tree that develops well, its value can at least double compared to the original price. This helps increase income for apricot tree growers. Currently, with his family's 5-hectare apricot garden, Mr. Duoc mainly does online business, selling apricot trees and bonsai apricot trees on e-commerce platforms, bringing in a high income.

Besides readily sharing his experience and replicating online apricot blossom business models and bonsai cultivation, Mr. Duoc also creates jobs for many local workers. “To prepare for the Tet apricot blossom season, I have to start grafting branches in advance. When the Tet live stream season arrives, because market demand increases, we livestream twice a day, and each live session requires at least three people to assist. Therefore, my apricot blossom garden always has people working,” Mr. Duoc said.

Currently, to continue developing bonsai apricot trees, Mr. Duoc is researching grafting techniques for apricot trees while they are still in the garden to help them grow better. "Grafting trees in the garden requires more technical expertise, so I'm still in the testing phase. If successful, it could save a lot of costs on processing and caring for the trees, and also allow them to recover while waiting for customers," Mr. Duoc said.

The economic development models of Mr. Vo Hoang Nha and Mr. Nguyen Tan Duoc demonstrate the flexible and creative production thinking of farmers in the current period. By knowing how to utilize local advantages and boldly innovating production and consumption methods, farmers can completely increase the value of their products, increase their income, and contribute to promoting sustainable rural economic development.
