Enhancing Bac Kan agricultural products

Winter melon, green banana, and tallow wood… used to be rustic products, but now they have been developed into resistant starch, herbal tea, and wooden knives and spoons that meet European standards. The reality of the development of the processing industry in Bac Kan shows the strength of linking raw material regions, technology, and the desire to get rich from local resources.

With the policy of encouragement and support mechanisms and policies, many agricultural and forestry products in Bac Kan , which were previously only extensively cultivated and lacked outlets, are now being deeply processed. As a result, the number of processed agricultural and forestry products has increased rapidly, many unique products have a wide consumer market, contributing to the formation and maintenance of a sustainable production chain.

At Thanh Binh Industrial Park, Cho Moi District, Ke Go Company Limited is one of the pioneers in green production. With the specificity that all products including wooden knives, spoons, and forks are exported to Europe and the US, the production process is strictly carried out according to very high standards. Raw wood is purchased from local production forests. After going through the preliminary processing stages with modern machinery, the raw materials are put into the raw product shaping stage, and finally brought to the finishing and packaging room. "The production process does not generate wastewater or emissions that are harmful to the environment. All must meet very high standards from international partners," affirmed company director Trinh Duc Kien. Thanks to Ke Go Company Limited's factory, tallow trees, which are common raw materials in Bac Kan, have been "transformed" into products present on international flights. This is a clear demonstration of the potential for deep processing if there is proper investment, linked to market demand.

Realizing the potential of local agricultural products that can be processed into healthy products, the Bac Kan Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Research and Development Cooperative (Bac Kan city) has chosen to start a business by processing teas and resistant starches (also known as resistant starches) from local agricultural products such as squash, bananas, turmeric starch, etc. The cooperative has invested in modern machinery and standard factories to produce new products; applying technology from the drying, mixing, and packaging stages... Cooperative members have attended training courses, especially the Institute of Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Research and Development has transferred science and technology. Currently, the cooperative has two 3-star OCOP products: fragrant squash tea and TBKBAKA resistant starch products. In 2024, the cooperative produced more than 8,400 products, consuming about 5 tons of green bananas per month, thereby increasing income for members and supporting product consumption for farmers in the province. According to research results, green bananas from Bac Kan province have a higher resistant starch content than other green bananas (in the northern provinces), so the Institute for Research and Development of Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics chose Bac Kan as the raw material growing area for the unit's resistant starch production.

To unleash the potential and promote the agricultural and forestry processing industry, Bac Kan has implemented many solutions, the key of which is using the budget to support research on the application of science and technology in processing and building industrial clusters to attract investment. Along with that are mechanisms and policies to support capital, infrastructure, brand building, product promotion, etc., creating attraction for many businesses to boldly change and expand their industries, and many cooperatives to participate in investing in machinery for deep processing. Currently, in Thanh Binh Industrial Park, there are 5 wood processing factories in operation, the main products are plywood, flooring and disposable household products made from wood; most of them are exported to markets such as the US, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, etc.

Many local enterprises participating in this field not only expand production but also make agricultural and forestry product processing their "main occupation", such as: Bac Ha Curcumin Joint Stock Company is one of the leading units in Vietnam to launch turmeric products in powder and liquid form that are completely soluble in water, with a purity of 95-98%; Ha Diep Company Limited with its golden flower tea products... Many cooperatives have become "famous" thanks to deep processing of agricultural products, such as: Tan Thanh Agricultural Cooperative has turmeric products certified as 3-star OCOP products; Tai Hoan Cooperative's vermicelli is recognized as a 5-star OCOP product, and is highly appreciated when exported to the European market...

With the goal of becoming one of the deep processing centers for agricultural, forestry, pharmaceutical, medicinal materials, wood and other products of the region, Bac Kan has selected a number of key processed products of the province associated with the development of raw material areas. Accordingly, the province calls on businesses and investors to invest in a number of projects, such as: plywood production with a capacity of 20,000 m3/year or more in Ba Be, Na Ri, Cho Don districts; wood and wooden furniture production for domestic use and export with a capacity of 5,000-10,000 m3/year; production and processing of products from wood, bamboo, rattan; processing of vegetables, fruits, and soft drinks using local materials;...

The province maintains stable operations and focuses on directing the development of raw material areas to supply existing wood manufacturing and processing factories in Thanh Binh Industrial Park, ensuring full operation at the designed capacity of 215,000 m3 of plywood/year and 170 million wooden spoons, knives, and forks/year. Along with that, it encourages the conversion of individual households processing wood and forest products to cooperative and enterprise models.

Based on the existing raw material areas and vermicelli processing facilities, along with the development of raw material areas for growing cassava, Bac Kan is aiming to develop vermicelli production clusters concentrated in Na Ri, Ba Be, Bac Kan city with a total capacity of more than 4,000 tons of vermicelli/year; at the same time, encouraging businesses and production facilities to research and develop additional products. The province also strengthens the production chain linkage from the stage of planting, processing starch and processing into products that meet standards and output to bring to large commercial centers and supermarkets and towards export.

Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Bac Kan, Ha Sy Thang, said that the province is speeding up the expansion project of Thanh Binh Industrial Park and Nam Bang Lung, Thanh Thinh, Vang Muoi, Chu Huong industrial clusters to create a space to attract secondary investment from agricultural and forestry processing enterprises. For cooperatives, continue to implement support policies on infrastructure, machinery, equipment, promotion connections, and product consumption so that units can boldly enter deep processing of agricultural and forestry products.

Currently, Bac Kan has up to 245 OCOP products, most of which are created from the agricultural and forestry processing industry; many products have been exported. This is the foundation for the locality to continue to expand the agricultural and forestry processing industry from deep processing, towards processing products with high scientific and technological application content, meeting strict requirements in the coming time.
