According to TASS News Agency, on July 11, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said that the alliance between Russia and North Korea has made their opponents worried, because the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between the two countries has changed the balance of power in the region.
"The most important thing is the agreements reached between the two countries, first of all, the treaty on strategic partnership between Russia and the DPRK. This is a very important document, introducing a completely new element to the balance of power in Northeast Asia. The consequences of this step have not yet been fully analyzed. In fact, a kind of alliance between Russia and the DPRK has been formed, and that worries our strategic rivals," said Mr. Rudenko.
Further developments in Northeast Asia will depend on how Russia and North Korea implement their strategic partnership treaty, Rudenko said. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in June resulted in a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between the two countries, which envisages immediate military support in the event of a defensive war. The Russian president pledged that the new treaty poses no threat to South Korea’s security.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that only potential aggressors would object to providing military assistance in the event of a defensive war.
