New tensions between Russia and Ukraine over drone attacks in early May have left Russian officials concerned about security during the Victory Day celebrations.
According to the Moscow authorities, more than 20,000 security personnel, police forces, and National Guards have been mobilized to ensure safety during this year's Victory Day celebrations in the capital. All crowded places are checked by special technical units and sniffer dogs. Russian security forces also increase control over facilities that may contain illegal residents or store prohibited items.
Of particular note was the security at the parade on Red Square. Red Square has been closed to visitors for two weeks. Immediately after the drone attack on the Kremlin in the early morning of May 3, the Moscow government issued a ban on drones flying over the city, except for those necessary for national needs.
Earlier, Russia issued a high terror threat level - yellow - in six regions near the border with Ukraine. Many cities, mostly in the south and southwest, canceled parades.
According to the Kremlin spokesman, Russian special forces are doing everything necessary to prevent possible provocations on Victory Day. This year, the Kremlin expanded the list of prohibited items to include a separate item banning the use of pocket drones.
