On the afternoon of March 31, Professor Vladimir Chulanov, the leading infectious disease expert of the Russian Ministry of Health , denied information that the mysterious virus causing many patients to cough up blood and have high fevers is a new virus.

Professor Chulanov said this could be a symptom of an acute respiratory infection, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

“Currently, many respiratory diseases are spreading everywhere in Russia, and this can cause a large number of pathogens to appear everywhere,” he added.

Regarding the phenomenon of coughing up blood, Mr. Chulanov said this is often a phenomenon of lung damage due to patients coughing continuously and violently.

“Blood streaks in sputum are often the result of patients coughing too much and too hard,” the professor explained about the phenomenon of coughing up blood in some patients.

He also advised patients to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment as soon as blood streaks appear when coughing.

Mr. Chulanov's statement is similar to the announcement on the morning of March 31 by the Russian consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor.

“During the epidemiological investigation and analysis of the genome structure of this virus, we confirmed that no new viruses have appeared in Russia, nor have any viruses undergone significant mutations,” a representative of the Russian consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor announced on March 31.

On March 29, Russia's SHOT news site reported that a virus of unknown origin had appeared in the country, causing some patients to cough up blood and have high fevers.

Patients infected with this mysterious virus all tested negative for COVID-19, influenza A, and influenza B.

Shortly afterwards, Lenta news site quoted several Russian medical experts as saying that this could be Mycoplasma bacteria that infects several areas of the human body, including the respiratory tract, based on the symptoms reported by the patients.

Russians struggle with respiratory diseases

Over the past months, people in the capital Moscow in particular and in Russia in general have struggled with many strains of acute respiratory infections, two strains of influenza A and B, and COVID-19.

However, in an announcement on March 31, a representative of Rospotrebnadzor said the number of COVID-19 cases in the past week had decreased by 20.2% compared to the previous week.

In addition, the incidence of acute respiratory infections and influenza strains also decreased by 10.8% last week.
