Banks spend heavily on technology development

Recently, banks have shown their active commitment to digital transformation and technology development. In 2024 alone, banks will invest more than VND 32 trillion in technology. Accordingly, in 2025, digital transformation and technology investment will continue to be an important goal that banks pay attention to.

In 2024, 27 listed banks invested a total of more than VND 32.4 trillion in technology, accounting for 14.8% of the industry's total operating costs. This is also the highest rate in the past 4 years. Accordingly, entering 2025, digital transformation continues to be one of the key goals of the banking industry. This is identified by banks as a key task alongside other priorities such as controlling bad debts and responding to fluctuations in tariff policies at the 2025 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders.

Spending heavily on technology development and digital transformation

The acceleration of digital transformation has also affected the number of employees of many banks. It is recorded that in the first quarter of 2025, the number of employees of 27 listed banks decreased by 2,143 people compared to the end of 2024, down to 277,024 people. In particular, many banks have cut thousands of employees in just 1 quarter, such as LPBank (decreased by 1,619 people), Sacombank (decreased by 970 people), VIB (decreased by 522 people), ...

On the contrary, there are also many banks that continue to expand their staff size while still promoting digital transformation. It is worth mentioning the banking giant BIDV , as of the end of the first quarter of 2025, BIDV is the bank with the highest number of additional staff in the system, an increase of 354 people. Followed by Techcombank with an increase of 347 people and Eximbank with an increase of 195 people.

According to Techcombank's leadership, the bank does not aim to cut staff, but focuses on improving the quality of human resources and improving the productivity of its staff.

According to banking experts, there are two directions for applying digital transformation and AI in the banking industry: efficiency and systems. If a bank applies digital transformation and AI to support its employees, it will usually not have a tendency to cut staff. However, if the strategy is to focus on digital transformation and building AI systems, etc., the bank can cut staff. But regardless of the strategy, employees who lack technological skills will be replaced by those who are capable of applying technology and AI./.
