The most impressive thing for the artist was when he played the role of Uncle Ho in the play “That Autumn Border”, about the Cao - Bac - Lang campaign in 1950. This was the first time Mr. Thang played the role of Uncle Ho.
The work was staged in 2020, aiming to celebrate the 130th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh; the 70th anniversary of the autumn-winter border campaign; the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Hai Duong Provincial Party Committee and to welcome the Party Congresses at all levels for the 2020-2025 term. For People's Artist Manh Thang, this is a great honor because since he first started his career, he never dared to think that one day he would play the role of Uncle Ho on stage.
Before him, many artists successfully portrayed Uncle Ho on both the Cheo stage and cinema, such as the late Meritorious Artist Tien Hoi, People's Artist Tran Luc, People's Artist Bui Bai Binh, Meritorious Artist Phu Kien... Therefore, playing the role of Uncle Ho for Mr. Thang is a big challenge but also an opportunity.
How to avoid being influenced by the big “shadows” that came before? How to express Uncle Ho’s love for his compatriots and soldiers through his appearance, pronunciation, demeanor, eyes, and smile when playing the role? These are the questions that put pressure on Mr. Thang.
People's Artist Manh Thang spent a lot of time and effort to learn, research documents, books, and newspapers about Uncle Ho and practice accordingly. He was also fortunate to have his teacher - Meritorious Artist Tien Hoi instruct him during the process of staging the play.
The play was highly appreciated for its ideological theme and the role of Uncle Ho. This work was also broadcast on many channels of Vietnam Television, creating a resonance with audiences and colleagues across the country. Because of that, he was often chosen to play the role of Uncle Ho in major events in and outside the province. In total, he has had the honor of playing the role of Uncle Ho more than 50 times to date.
Every time he appeared on stage as Uncle Ho, the audience exclaimed: How similar? Many times when he went out, the audience recognized him and gave him compliments, he felt extremely happy, and had more motivation to continue practicing, learning, and perfecting his role for the next time.
It is the same image of Uncle Ho, but each play, program, and performance is different because at each moment, Uncle Ho's figure and demeanor change. Therefore, he also has to change his makeup and gestures to look as similar to Uncle Ho at that time as possible. For Mr. Thang, playing the role of Uncle Ho on the Cheo stage is the most precious reward after 35 years of working in the profession.
Through the role of Uncle Ho, People's Artist Manh Thang learned many things from his style, ideology, and ethics; accumulated professional thinking and a deeper perspective for other roles.
