Broken up because phone automatically connected to hotel wifi

An unusual incident that occurred in Chongqing city (China) is causing a lot of controversy on the country's online community.

During the Golden Week holiday in early May, a couple checked into a hotel in Chongqing. When checking in, the female tourist discovered she had forgotten to bring her ID.

This person opened her phone to use her electronic ID card. Suddenly, her phone reported that it had successfully connected to the hotel's Wifi network without using a password.

Witnessing this moment, the female tourist's boyfriend was suspicious. He asked his girlfriend directly if she had stayed here with someone before, which is why the Wifi network automatically connected.

Although the girl repeatedly claimed that she had never been to the hotel, her boyfriend still did not believe her. The two got into a heated argument and eventually decided to go their separate ways.

The love affair ended but the girl felt resentful and wanted to find the cause of the incident.

According to the girl, this person used to work at a nearby hotel. This accommodation facility had Wifi and the password coincidentally matched the hotel where the couple had visited. Therefore, the girl's phone was able to automatically connect thanks to the password memory feature.

To verify, a reporter tested by connecting to the Wifi at the hotel where the female tourist used to work.

Later, when arriving at the hotel where the incident occurred, the reporter checked the phone and saw that the device automatically connected to Wifi without entering a password. This partly shows that the female tourist's explanation is reasonable.

For her part, when the incident was exposed, the female tourist affirmed that she wanted to clarify this not because she wanted to reconnect with her ex, but to reclaim her honor.

"I just want to accept his apology. We broke up just because of a technological coincidence. He should not insult my dignity," the female tourist said.

Wifi automatically connects: Not a rare phenomenon

The story also received attention from the online community. Many people expressed sympathy for the female tourist and said that they had encountered similar situations when their phones automatically connected to Wifi with the name and password they had previously logged in.

Technology experts also confirm that this phenomenon can happen.

According to the operating principle, when a mobile device encounters a Wifi network with the same name (SSID) and saved password, it will automatically connect if the "auto-connect to saved networks" feature is enabled.

In this case, even if the two hotels are different, if they use the same network name and password, the device can still be recognized and accessed as usual.

However, experts also warn that letting your phone automatically connect to public WiFi poses a risk of personal data leakage. Users should consider turning off this feature to ensure information security.

"This case reflects a sad reality. In an era where technology is developing rapidly, people seem to fall into a state of suspicion and distrust in each other. So does technology make life more convenient, or does it make the distance between people become more distant?", a Weibo account asked.
