The study was conducted by experts at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York State (USA) on 502 volunteers. All were cancer survivors, according to the Daily Mail (UK).

The volunteers were divided into two groups. The first group was not asked to exercise, while the second group practiced yoga twice a week for four weeks. Each session lasted 75 minutes. Blood tests were done at the beginning and end of the study to assess inflammation levels in the body.

The analysis results showed that after 4 weeks, the level of inflammatory chemicals in the yoga group was significantly lower than in the other group. Meanwhile, inflammation in the body is the toxic agent that stimulates cancer to develop, spread or recur.

Therefore, researchers believe that practicing yoga will help reduce the severity of cancer, reduce the risk of cancer spreading and recurrence. This benefit can begin to be achieved after only 8 yoga sessions in 4 weeks. The research results were announced at the recently held conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago (USA).

"Our data show that yoga practice significantly reduces inflammation in cancer survivors. Clinicians should consider prescribing yoga to cancer survivors," the study concluded.

Exercise also reduces the risk of early death in cancer survivors. Even just walking 30 minutes a day or doing basic tasks such as shopping, planting trees, gardening can increase the chance of living longer - Photo: SHUTTERSTOCK

Science has long known the harmful effects of inflammatory substances in the body. These inflammatory substances will cause an inflammatory response. The inflammatory response is necessary to inform the immune system to send white blood cells and release chemicals to destroy infections and heal injuries. However, prolonged inflammation can damage healthy cells and tissues in the body and weaken the immune system.

Some previous research evidence also shows that exercise also reduces the risk of early death in cancer survivors. Even just walking 30 minutes a day or doing basic tasks such as shopping, planting trees, gardening also increases the chance of living longer, according to the Daily Mail.
