The leading candidates for this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine are from many fields, including research on mRNA technology in Covid-19 vaccines; the discovery of the hormone GLP-1 that helps with weight loss and diabetes treatment; and research on narcolepsy.

Laureates are awarded a Nobel diploma, a Nobel medal and a prize of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $989,000) on December 10. Scientists often have to wait decades for their work to be recognized by the Nobel Committee.

In 2022, the Nobel Committee named scientist Svante Pääbo for his discoveries related to human evolution. Through his pioneering research, Professor Svante Pääbo sequenced the genome of Neanderthals, an extinct relative of modern humans. He also discovered Denisovans, a previously unknown hominin, from a 40,000-year-old finger bone fragment.

Professor Pääbo’s work also shows that a genetic shift occurred in extinct humans to Homo sapiens after they migrated out of Africa around 70,000 years ago. These ancient genes are relevant to human physiology today, influencing our immune system and how we respond to infectious diseases.

Every year in October, committees in Sweden and Norway award six Nobel Prizes in the fields of physiology or medicine, physics, chemistry, economic sciences, literature, and peace. Each prize recognizes groundbreaking contributions by an individual or organization.
